She has worked and saved for three years to reach her goal. At the start of the book, her attention is fixed on billionaire Saul Jerrard, which is a red herring. It is really Saul Jerrard's much younger sister Stephanie who has captured her attention and whom she has come to see. Why? I will not spoil the book for you, but the storyline involves Candace's own troubled personal and family history, worries about kidnapping and international terrorists, and a certain ruthless billionaire completely determined to protect his kid sister.  \nCHAPTER ONE  \nIn spite of the fact that she had come all the way to the South Pacific island ofFala‟isi to find him, Candace Hume didn‟t recognise Saul Jerrard at first sight.  \nOh, like almost everyone in the opulent room she turned her head at the first subdued stir at the door of the hotel restaurant, and something in her heart jumped when she caught a glimpse of him as he was being respectfully ushered in. Tall and dark, with the smooth waves of his hair gleaming almost black in the subdued lights, he was formally elegant in the tropical kit of white dinner-jacket and red cummerbund. Candace‟s eyes lingered on the wide shoulders and long lean legs, but what compelled her attention was his arrogant air of confidence as he walked towards  \nher across the restaurant floor.  \nRich, she thought cynically.  \nVery rich, as the head waiter moved smoothly but rapidly to greet him—smiling!  \nAnd powerful with it. Two men she recognised as Australian politicians got to their feet to greet him in a manner that was subtly deferential. His response was cordial but he was clearly not impressed by their greetings or the aura of power that surrounded them. That could well be because his own was infinitely more impressive.  \nA man born to rule, she decided idly.  \nAs he came closer she drank in his appearance with an odd intensity. Perhaps her thoughts were spearing across the air-conditioned restaurant because he turned his head to look directly at her, and it was then that recognition hit her with an impact that was almost physical.  \nAlthough the ritual of greeting was over, a trace of his smile still lingered on his well-cut mouth. It was oddly remote, as though he had no warmth in him at all. His features were striking, so impressive that his looks were not important beyond an austerely magnificent bone-structure.  \nToying with the glass of fruit salad that had been all she could afford for dessert, Candace had thought she was being discreet in her fascinated survey, but his brilliant eyes, the rare clear cornflower-blue of the most precious sapphires, sharpened as they met hers. Magician‟s eyes, shaman‟s eyes, cold and crystalline, very hard, very keen, fierce as a raptor‟s predatory gaze, they seemed to pierce right through her outward defences to dissect the vulnerable woman who hid her most intimate thoughts and emotions behind a shield of brisk common sense.  \nFor a second, too brief to be conclusive, she thought he might be going to stop. However, if his lean legs had faltered in their stride, his reflexes were as swift as the eagle‟s she compared him to. His face hardened; he gave Candace one more piercing, oddly impersonal glance and went on past.  \nThe woman on his arm said something. Sickly Candace realised that she had entirely ignored the fact that he was accompanied. With an involuntary gasp her gaze flew to the beautiful countenance of his companion, then her lashes sank down and a chilling disappointment leached the colour from her face.
