Tower:and OtherRadio Scripts which was published in 1947.Though the present edition contains TheDark Tower only,we decided to reprint theintroduction as it was originally written. \n# GENERAL INTRODUCTION\n\nTHE interest shown in such few radio scripts as have been pub-lished(the most notable recent example being The Rescue by myfriend Mr.Edward Sackville-West)has encouraged me to publishsome more of my own.I do this not only because like all radiowriters I feel frustrated each time a script has been broadcast butin the hope that a selection of dissimilar pieces may throw somelight on the medium.I have chosen The Dark Tower because Ithink it the best radio script I have written;the others areincluded as fairly clear-cut examples—I would certainly not saymodels—of different types of programme. All of them seem tome worth reading. \nHaving in my Introduction to Christopher Columbus essayed ageneral exposition of radio-dramatic writing,I will not labouragain those main points which I still consider valid,e.g.that 'thefirst virtue of a radio script is construction'.But I would like insome respects to correct myself. That the radio writer ‘mustmove on a more or less primitive plane’is,I think now,an over-statement or at least misleadingly expressed. What the radiowriter must do,if he hopes to win the freedom of the air,is toappeal on one plane—whatever he may be doing on the others—tothe more primitive listener and to the more primitive elements inanyone;i.e.he must give them(what Shakespeare gave them)entertainment.1 \nIn the same Introduction I wrote:'As compared with mostcontemporary literature, the objective elements will prepon-derate over the subjective, statement over allusion, synthesisover analysis.'This again I want to qualify;the comparison withcontemporary literature may have misled me.The ‘psychological'novel, concerned chiefly with ‘subjective'experiences, deals \n1 The reception of The Dark Tower supports this. Many listeners said that theyenjoyed it,found it 'beautiful’,‘exciting'etc.—but had ‘no idea what it wasabout.'In fact they were
