So when Colin Martin ran off with Kurt's fiancee, disaster threatened. Kurt needed pacifying, and Maxine, the family's secretary, was sent to Morocco to do it.  \nUnfortunately, Kurt immediately jumped to the conclusion that Maxine was Colin's promiscuous sister. Despite her protests, Maxine soon found herself on a desert trek, prisoner of the ruthless sheikh.  \n\"None of you can escape reprisal,\" he warned, his eyes raking over her arrogantly. \"And yours, cherie, will be most pleasantly fitting.... \"  \nCHAPTER ONE  \nFOR a whole day Maxine Martin had waited in Casablanca for some form of acknowledgement from Kurt d'Estier, and none came. It wasn't until the morning of the second day that his secretary rang back to say she had managed to get in touch with him, and he would be quite willing to see Miss Martin at an arranged rendezvous.  \n'Merci. ' Maxine remained polite only with difficulty. She hoped the secretary wouldn't detect her sarcasm as she told her she was most kind. 'Vous etes tres amiable. '  \n'Not at all, mademoiselle,' the secretary assured her smoothly, in excellent English, which Maxine suspected was meant to demonstrate without words exactly what she thought of Maxine's halting French.  \n'Where do I see Monsieur d'Estier?' asked Maxine, seeing no sense in prolonging the conversation. 'I realise he—he must have a lot on his mind at the moment, but I hope he doesn't intend keeping me \"waiting much longer?  \n'No, no, of course not.' The secretary's voice was still smooth. From it Maxine was unable to guess whether she was aware of the sudden misfortune which had struck Kurt d'Estier or not. 'But I'm afraid Mademoiselle must be prepared to make the journey to his ksar, as he cannot see you in Casa.'  \n'Casa?'  \n'Je vous demaade pardon, mademoiselle. I mean Casablanca.'  \n'I see.' Again Maxine felt foolish, and again reacting sensitively, wondered if this had been intended. She went on quickly, glad the secretary couldn't see her pink cheeks, 'How do I get there, then? I'm afraid I have no idea where Monsieur d'Estier lives.'  \n'He has several homes, mademoiselle,' the voice of efficiency purredon. 'He is at present at his castle in the High Atlas, and if you would leave at once for Marrakesh, he will arrange for you to be picked up atthe airport.'  \nUncertainly, Maxine's brow furrowed. This was some thing she hadn't been prepared for. Mrs Martin, Maxine's employer of the same name as herself, had been insistent that there would be no need to go any further than Casablanca, where she was now.  \nThe secretary, taking Maxine's consent for granted, proceeded to give her a time of departure, assuring her that a taxi would be sent immediately to take her to the plane.  \nWhen Maxine murmured. Thank you,' rather dazedly, the woman said sharply, 'I should advise you not to keep Monsieur d'Estier waiting. He is a very busy man and doesn't appreciate those who waste his time.'  \nHot with indignation, Maxine stammered, 'I have no intention of doing that.'  \nThen that will be all, mademoiselle. Av revoir,' and the paragon at the other end hung up, without giving Maxine a chance to reply.  \n'Goodbye, yourself!' Maxine muttered, on a wave of youthful frustration, banging down the dead receiver. Uneasily she wondered what the woman was called. When Maxine had asked to speak to Kurt d'Estier yesterday, in the huge business complex where Mrs Martin said she would find him, she had been put through to his secretary, but the woman hadn't given her name, although Maxine had asked.
