Chicago,in 1879,Capt.F.W.Ben-teen,senior captain of Custer's regiment, the famousSeventh Cavalry, here relates the part he played in that mostdisastrous of Indian fights on American soil, over which morecontroversy has raged than over any other battle foughtagainst the red man in the United States. \nMuch of the account is from his own testimony at the RenoInquiry;some of it is from an article he wrote, but never pub-lished,and some of it is from the personal letters of Capt.Benteen.Certain charges were made against Major Marcus \nA.Reno and Capt.Benteen by Frederick Whittaker,Custer'sbiographer. At the last moment Whittaker withdrew hischarges against Capt.Benteen.He also utterly failed to sub-stantiate his charges against Major Reno, the verdict of theCourt being that\"there was nothing in his conduct which re-quires animadversion from this Court, and that in view of allthe facts in evidence,no further proceedings are necessary inthis case.\" \nNo officer in the Civil War won a more brilliant record thanMajor Reno,he being brevetted by grades from a lieutenantto a colonel \"for gallant and meritorious service.\"Later,heserved as Assistant Instructor of Infantry Tactics at the U.S.Military Academy at West Point. \nThe testimony at the Reno Inquiry developed the fact thatboth Capt.Benteen and Major Reno had done the best thatcould be done with what they had to do with, after Custer'sfatal separation of the regiment;and that, but for their ex-traordinary heroism and bravery in the fight on the bluffs, following Custer's complete annihilation four and a half milesdown the Little Big Horn river, the troops under their chargewould likewise have been wiped out. \nCapt.Benteen's testimony and extracts from his lettersproves absolutely that Custer had formed no battle plans atthe time he made his battalion assignments;or,if he had suchplans,he did not reveal
