historian.Dramaticpurposes have sometimes required many charactersto be fused into one;the number of girls involvedin the\"crying-out\"has been reduced;Abigail's agehas been raised;while there were several judgesof almost equal authority,I have symbolized them allin Hathorne and Danforth. However,I believe thatthe reader wil discover here the essential nature ofone of the strangest and most awful chapters in humanhistory. The fate of each character is exactly that ofhis historical model, and there is no one in thedrama who did not play a similar —and in somecases exactly the same —role in history. \nAs for the characters of the persons, little is knownabout most of them excepting what may be surmisedfrom a few letters, the trial record, certain broadsideswritten at the time, and references to their conductin sources of varying reliability. They may thereforebe taken as creations of my own, drawn to the best ofmy ability in conformity with their known behavior, except as indicated in the commentary I have writtenfor this text. \n# setng\n\nC \nA small upper bedroom in the home of Reverend SamueParris,Salem,Massachusetts,in the spring of the year1692. \n# ·Walking wherever he went, despite hisbest efforts to win people and God to his side.Inmeeting,he felt insulted if someone rose to shut thedoor without first asking his permission. He was awidower with no interest in children,or talent withthem. He regarded them as young adults, anduntil this strange crisis he,like the rest of Salem, never conceived that the children were anythingbut thankful for being permitted to walk straight, eyes slightly lowered, arms at the sides, and mouthsshut until bidden to speak. \nHis house stood in the “town”—but we todaywould hardly call it a village. The meeting house wasnearby, and from this point outward—toward the \nbay or inland—there were a few small-windowed,dark houses snuggling against the raw Massachusettswinter.Salem had been established hardly fortyyears before. To the European world the wholeprovince was a barbaric frontier inhabited by a sect offanatics who, nevertheless, were shipping out productsof slowly increasing quantity and value. \nNo one can
