For the last 11 months, we have heard the Gospel of Matthew proclaimed. With the First Sunday of Advent, we will start reading cycle Year B. We read the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. Mark is the shortest of the Synoptic Gospels. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Luke tell us about the infancy of Jesus. Only Luke recounts the angel's visit to Zechariah, the husband of Elizabeth, and Gabriel's annunciation to Mary. \nAs we focus on the words of the Apostle's Creed \"born of the Virgin Mary\", let us zero in on three concepts. \n1. Mary's FIAT \na. A Latin word for \"Let it be done. \" \nb. Free will, the importance of Mary's consent \nc. How open am I to God's Word (Jesus) in my life? \n2. Who is Jesus? \na. Historically \nb. His Mission \nc. My relationship with Jesus \n3. Luke 1:30 \"Then the angel said to her, \"Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. \" How do I understand that I am favored by God? \nLessons \nChristmas is a highly significant celebration in the Church, second only to Easter, as it commemorates the incarnation of Jesus Christ. The Christmas season, lasting for eight days, emphasizes the themes of God's choice to dwell among humanity, the concept of solidarity, anda focus on the person of Jesus Christ. In December 2023, Christmas falls on a Monday. \nDecember 2023: Mass Readings and Resources \nAdvent is 4 Sundays not 4 weeks. This year we will have the shortest Advent possible since the 4th Sunday of Advent is December 24th and the next day, Monday, is Christmas. \nAdditional Resources \nThe account [from the Gospel of Luke] presents parallel scenes (diptychs) of angelic announcements of the birth of John the Baptist and of Jesus, and of the birth, circumcision, and presentation of John and Jesus. In this parallelism, the ascendency of Jesus over John is stressed: John is prophet of the Most High ( Lk 1:76); Jesus is Son of the Most High ( Lk 1:32) . John is great in the sight of the Lord ( Lk 1:15); Jesus will be Great (a LXX attribute, used absolutely, of God) ( Lk 1:32) . John will go before the Lord ( Lk 1:16–17); \nJesus will be Lord ( Lk 1:43; 2:11) . \nEnd notes Luke Chapter 1 NABRE \nThe Annunciation is an occasion for Christians to reflect on Mary's faith and humility, and to follow her example of saying \"fiat\" or \"yes\" to God's call. \nMary says, \" Let it be done to me according to your word,\" demonstrating her trust in God and her willingness to participate in his plan for salvation. \nMary's faithfulness and obedience to God have made her an important figure in the Christian tradition, and she is often viewed as a model of discipleship and devotion to God. The incarnation of Jesus shows God's willingness to become human in order to save humanity \n In saying \"yes\" to God's call, Mary became the new Ark of the Covenant, carrying within her the Word of God made flesh.
