of theChurch is essentially and primarilyspiritual and religious. But,at the sametime, the Church lives in the world, andsuffers as the world around her suffers. She also benefits,as the world aroundherbenefits, from allforms of truehuman progress, political, scientific, technological and cultural. The Churchand her ability to accomplish hermission are affected by what happens inthe world and in society. For example, the Church greatly benefits by thefreedom she enjoys in America whileshe suffers considerably by therepression of religious and civil rights intotalitarian societies. \nThere are religious reasons for theChurch's desire to contribute to the goodof humanity and therefore religious forsome role, however limited, for theChurch in the temporal orderHermission may be essentially andprimarily spiritual and religious but it isnot restricted to those things or areas oflife which are strictly religious. \nFully endorsing the autonomy andindependence of both Church and State, the Church nevertheless envisions itsrelationship to the State ideally as oneof cordial good will. But to speak of theChurch's relationship to the State is notthe whole story. The State is only onecomponent of society.Society is a muchbroader reality than the State, and theChurch has a relationship to and a rolein society which is not exhausted by herrelationship to the State. \nContinued on page 186
