Crash...............2Stuck!...............5Discovery..............9The Oxygen Mystery.......12 \nHarcourt \nThe Crash \nI'm alive. That was Soto's first thought afterthe crash. He could see the orange glow of theTitan sky.He could hear the Landcraft 3's com-puter giving a report on the craft's systems. \nIt was a discouraging report.Forward motion,failed.Lift,failed.Communication,failed.Lifesupport,failing fast.Soto was alive, but his land-craft was dead. \nThe dust storm had struck suddenly.BeforeSoto could react, the landcraft had been thrownout of control. He remembered the last thing hehad seen.It was a crater,a huge cavity in therocky surface of Titan. His wrecked landcraftnow lay at the bottom of that crater. \nSoto checked his space suit.It was not dam-aged as far as he could tell.He climbed out of the \nlandcraft and inflatedhis portable habitat.Only after he wasinside the habitat didhe remove his helmetand begin to considerhis problem. \nHe was in a crater on Titan, the largest moonof Saturn.Saturn had at least seventeen othersmaller moons and many small satellites.Titanwas huge, bigger than the planet Mercury.Therest of the astronauts in Soto's group were livingat Titan Base.Every day they made trips out fromthe base to explore Titan. \nThis crater was in a remote area, far from thebase.Soto had been on a course toward the GreatSouthern Sea,near the largest of Titan's mysteri-ous \"warm spots.\" \n3 \nSoto knew people from the base would comelooking for him.But where would they look?Thestorm had blown him off course. How far offcourse?Where was he? \nHe looked at the shadows.Even through thickclouds, the sun shone brightly, causing dark shad-ows.Giant Saturn, only 1.2 million kilometersaway, also gave off light that was reflected fromthe sun. \nThe orange-colored clouds kept Soto from see-ing Saturn's wide rings of rocks, gas, and ice.Still,he knew they were up there. \n4 \nStuck! \nThe cavity of the crater had steep walls.Thecrater had probably been created when a meteorhit Titan's surface centuries ago.Soto's wreckedlandcraft was in deep shadow.A rescue partymight not spot him or the ship. \nHe wanted to call the base on his radio, butradio signals did not work well on Titan.Therewas too much interference from Saturn.Saturn'smagnetic fields made it difficult to send messagesbetween the landcrafts and the base. \nHe had to get out of the crater. \nSoto ate and rested. He could carry the habitat, but food would be a problem if he were not res-cued soon.He had only enough food for two days. \nHe gazed at the crater's high wall. The viewwas discouraging. He had climbed steeper rockson Earth, and at Titan's low gravity he weighedonly a fraction of his normal weight. However,Soto had been living at low gravity for two Earthyears.Moving around was so easy that his mus-cles had become weak. Was he still strong enoughto climb the crater wall? \n6 \nSoto was a pioneer. He and the others on thisremote moon were preparing the way for amigration.Titan Base would be the foundationfor a domed city. \nHydrogen
