performed at the Teatro Lara,Madrid,on the 21st of February,1911.At the outset it was seento be a wholly exceptional piece, one of the rare inspirations of thetheatre. The run, inaugurated modestly, continued throughout theseason, while a reprise opened the same house during the autumn.Since that time“The Cradle Song”has been done everywhere, translated into all the major languages, meeting invariably with thesame instant, affectionate response.Within the past decade it hastaken its place as an international classic, serene and enduring asthe simple humanity and faith which lie at its heart. \nAugustin Duncan introduced the play to the English-speakingstage at the Times Square Theatre,New York,February 28,1921,meeting with artistic success. On November 2,1926,it was actedat the Fortune Theatre,London, with Miss Gillian Scaife as SisterJoanna of the Cross, achieving a run of 109 performances.EvaLe Gallienne next brought her singularly fine and sensitive inter-pretation to the Civic Repertory Theatre,New York,January 24,1927,where it has been given 167 times.Meanwhile a specialcompany headed by Miss Mary Shaw travelled through the UnitedStates.Other notable performances are those of the Old Vic,Everyman,“Q”and Scala Theatres,London, the Playhouses atOxford and Liverpool, and the Abbey Theatre,Dublin. The playhas proved equally popular with Anglican and Catholic, while, favoured by its locale,it seems especially at home in institutions ofthe Dominican Order. From as far afield as Nairobi,East Africa,Singapore,Straits Settlements, and Hobart,Tasmania, audiencesbear tribute to its spell. The longest recorded run of“The CradleSong”has been that of the French production at the Théatre desChamps Elysees,Paris, where it exceeded 300 nights. \nThe text as printed follows the prompt book of the Civic RepertoryTheatre.Attention may be called to the Notes Upon Direction andPerformance, together with the biographical sketch of the
