\n# The Chairman's Introduction\n\nT IS ALWAYs a pleasure for me to be able to introduce the AnnualReport of the Council of Christians and Jews. This year,as willbe seen,it is a geographical record—almost a travel book—taking the reader on a tour of Europe and the Middle East, butdescribing these places not so much in terms of scenery and ancientbuildings as of the Council's \"comings and goings”. \nI \nThe basic educational work has gone forward quietly andsteadily, and through this we can point to some events of outstandingconsequence. There have been several Conferences, for instance, both at home and abroad, which have been conspicuous milestonesfor us.Then,at the close of the year, there was the great satisfactionof listening to our President,His Grace the Archbishop of Canter-bury,when he gave the Ninth Waley Cohen Lecture under theChairmanship of Sir Robert's son.Another delightful landmarkwas the reception given for us by Sir Cyril Black at the House ofCommons. And,finally,we have again welcomed to the Council, with the utmost pleasure, members of the Roman Catholic com-munity:this now makes us a truly representative body, and it isparticularly good to have the Rt.Hon.the Earl of Perth as aVice-President,thus taking up again an office previously held byhis father, who was one of the original Vice-Presidents. \nAll this work has its importance because of the backgroundagainst which it has been carried out.It has indeed been a verymixed year.Opening with understandable anxiety over the Com-monwealth Immigrants Bill and the reverberations of the EichmannTrial,it has held for many of us an undercurrent of distress anduneasiness owing to continuing reports of increasing neo-fascistactivities.But there has also been a positive aspect to the year, andwe hope that the Council, through its many activities, may havecontributed in some measure to a lessening of the many tensionsin which, today,we are all caught up. \nOur greatest regret has been the departure of Wallace Bell toAthens:our one consolation, tempering this loss, that the Councilhas thereby acquired another outpost in distant territory. \nIn short,we can look back over a full and varied time-tableof“comings and goings,”and forward,we hope,to yet another activeyear:certainly regarding neither with complacency but yet—as oneof our Councils expressed it—\"with tremendous hope.\"
