Living in Ireland and facing limited opportunities, she finds support through James Barry and General Miranda, then turns bravery into action by cutting her hair, training her voice, and studying relentlessly. The narrative highlights determination, education, and courageous self-belief.","The Cottonwool Doctor \nThe story of Margaret Ann Bulkly, known as Dr. James Barry \nEnglish Non Fiction \nThe Cottonwool Doctor \nWritten by Michelle Matthews Illustrated by Jean de Wet Book Dash \nEnglish \nIllustrated by Jean de Wet Written by Michelle Matthews \nDesigned by Bridgitte Chemaly Potton with the help of the Book Dash participants in Cape Town on 10 May 2014. Margaret lived in a cool, green land called Ireland, in a country called Great Britain. \nMargaret was clever and curious. Margaret had big dreams. Margaret was brave and fought when she thought something was wrong. \nMargaret's mother and father paid for her brother to be educated as a lawyer . And then they used the last of their money so that he could marry a wealthy man's daughter. \nMargaret was clever and had big dreams. But there was no money left for her to study, not even as a governess ora nurse . \nMargaret was brave . \"I want to be adoctor!\" she said. But two hundred years ago a girl could not become a lawyer or a politician or a doctor. \nMargaret had an uncle who was a famous painter. His name was James Barry. \nOne of James Barry's friends was General Miranda from Venezuela. General Miranda had a library---it was very beautiful and very big. His library had more than 6000 books! \n\"I want to read this one! And this one! And this one!\" said Margaret. She was clever and curious. General Miranda was impressed. \nWhen Margaret's uncle James Barry died, he left her some money. \"It's enough money to study to be a doctor!\"said General Miranda. \n\"But I can't become a doctor,\" said Margaret. \n\"A boy can become a doctor,\" said General Miranda . \"And you can dress like a boy. \" \nMargaret was brave and she fought for what she believed in. She really wanted to be a doctor. So she cut off her hair. She practiced speaking in a deep voice. She put on boy's clothes . \nFrom then onwards, no one knew that Margaret was a girl. She became James Barry, just like her uncle. \nJames Barry was a hard-working medical student. He took 13 subjects and worked all through the summer when the other students went on holiday.","cbCaimwKV8qo7RvE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimwKV8qo7RvE","pdf",23281537,2,23,"English","en",105,"# The Cottonwool Doctor\n## Margaret Ann Bulkly’s early life\n## The plan to become a doctor\n## Medical study and persistence","[{\"question\":\"Why can’t Margaret Ann Bulkly study to become a doctor when she is young?\",\"answer\":\"At the time, girls could not become doctors, and her family’s money was left for her brother rather than her education.\"},{\"question\":\"How does General Miranda help Margaret pursue her goal?\",\"answer\":\"He suggests that a boy can become a doctor and encourages her to dress like a boy so she can be accepted.\"},{\"question\":\"What does Margaret do to keep her true identity hidden?\",\"answer\":\"She cuts off her hair, practices speaking in a deep voice, and wears boys’ clothes, so people do not realize she is a girl.\"}]",1784313550,35,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":27},"the-cottonwool-doctor-the-story-of-margaret-ann-bulkly-known-as-dr-james-barry","",{"@graph":35,"@context":84},[36,52,67],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,46,49],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-cottonwool-doctor-the-story-of-margaret-ann-bulkly-known-as-dr-james-barry/92245/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":40,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-25","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"Why can’t Margaret Ann Bulkly study to become a doctor when she is young?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"At the time, girls could not become doctors, and her family’s money was left for her brother rather than her education.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"How does General Miranda help Margaret pursue her goal?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"He suggests that a boy can become a doctor and encourages her to dress like a boy so she can be accepted.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"What does Margaret do to keep her true identity hidden?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"She cuts off her hair, practices speaking in a deep voice, and wears boys’ clothes, so people do not realize she is a girl.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
