When the opportunity finally arrives, Martin breaks into the house and faces the threat directly, only to find his long-prepared self-defence skills testing his resolve in the moment. The story emphasizes psychological pressure, procedural planning, and a violent reversal of power as Martin forces the encounter to end on his terms.","THE CORRECTION \nMATT BROLLY \nOCEANOFPDF.COM \nFor Michael Brolly \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCONTENTS \nPrologue \nChapter 1 \nChapter 2 \nChapter 3 \nChapter 4 \nChapter 5 \nChapter 6 \nChapter 7 \nChapter 8 \nChapter 9 \nChapter 10 \nChapter 11 \nChapter 12 \nChapter 13 \nChapter 14 \nChapter 15 \nChapter 16 \nChapter 17 \nChapter 18 \nChapter 19 \nChapter 20 \nChapter 21 \nChapter 22 \nChapter 23 \nChapter 24 \nChapter 25 \nChapter 26 \nChapter 27 \nChapter 28 \nChapter 29 \nChapter 30 \nChapter 31 \nChapter 32 \nChapter 33 \nChapter 34 \nChapter 35 \nChapter 36 \nChapter 37 \nChapter 38 \nChapter 39 \nChapter 40 \nChapter 41 \nChapter 42 \nChapter 43 \nChapter 44 \nChapter 45 \nEpilogue \nThank you! \nAlso by Matt Brolly \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPROLOGUE \nM aybehimseiflf amyan hadnIt had’t stakledhiatmahimfew, Martinsecondws, ouhidnin’haialvelogoikveonf \nindignation slowly changing to one of recognition.‘Hello, Martin. Long time no see,’ he’d said. \nHe was much older, frailer even, but that smile was the same. \nMartin hadn’t understood it properly in the past but the gesture was practised, designed to put him at ease while at the same time asserting dominance. Before, it had been as if the man were looking straight into his very soul. The smile always suggested he knew every little detail about Martin and would ultimately use it to his own ends. \nAnd it seemed that nothing much had changed. \nMartin felt the same chill he’d experienced every time the man had smiled at him in the past. It penetrated his bones, deep into his marrow, and all he wanted to do now was retreat, to escape this folly and pretend none of this had ever happened. \nBut they wouldn’t let him. \nMartin had been following the man for weeks, tailing him through the streets of Worle day after day from a safe distance. \nEvery day, the man conducted the same mundane routine: morning walk, visit to the newsagents, an evening pint of beer, and dinner at home. The lights always went off in the master bedroom between 10:30 p.m. and \n11:00 p.m. \nIt didn’t feel right to Martin that someone so monstrous could live a life of such mundanity when he should’ve been wrestling continuously with demons. He went about his day as if he wasn’t any different from anyone else, as if he wasn’t a destroyer of lives. \nSuch was the easy domesticity of the man’s routine that Martin had begun to doubt himself. Maybe the man’s crimes were imagined, or he was stalking the wrong person. His mind started playing tricks on him, suggesting that people could change, and that this old man who walked to the shops every morning to get his newspaper was nothing like the person he’d once been. \nBut they’d dissuaded him from such notions. \nThey’d reminded him of his purpose and had even gone so far as torecount the terrible things the man had done. Yet even as he took the key from its hiding place and let himself into the side garage now used as a maintenance room, Martin’s doubts remained. \nThey’d told him he had to be the first. The plan was simple: track and follow the man until the opportunity arose, then subdue and expose him. It had sounded easy enough, but many opportunities had presented themselves and Martin had balked at the last moment, until it reached a stage where they’d begun to lose faith in him. \nIt had to be tonight, they told him, and so it was that he’d taken that extra step of courage. He’d broken in when the man had been at the pub, and was now face to face with him for the first time since this had all begun. \n‘So, what are you doing here, Martin? Why are you inside my house?’ \nThe man had taken a step nearer, the same penetrating smile still plastered on his wizened face. Like an apparition, he now held a hammer in his right hand, having swiped it from a workbench like a magic trick. \nHis eyes followed Martin’s gaze to the weapon, and he gave a slight nod of acknowledgment. \nMartin’s resolve was fading.
