Jefferson asked twomen to find a way across North America to thePacific Ocean.Meriwether Lewis and WilliamClark started their trek near St.Louis,Missouri.They led a group of about thirty called the Corpsof Discovery. It took them two years to get to thePacific Coast and back. The trip was very long andvery dangerous. \nTheir journey is one of the most famousjourneys in American history.Today, the whole \n3,700-mile (5,955 km)trail is a national park.It iscalled the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail.Everyyear, thousands of people follow this path. \nLewis and Clark traveled a long way. \nA good place to start is at the Museum ofWestward Expansion in St.Louis.The museumis under the Gateway Arch. The Arch is 630 feet(192 m)high!Thirty-three giant photographs \nshowing places all along the Lewis and Clark Trailhang in the museum. Each year, thousands of \nvisitors study these pictures intently. Some of thesepeople then begin their long trek. \nFort Osage is an interesting museum. \nMost people drive cars along the Lewis andClark Historic Trail.Others bike.Still,othershike.All along the way, signs point visitors northand west.At first, visitors follow the Missouri \nRiver.The Corps of Discoverytraveled in boats on the river.Insome spots, they had to carrythe boats around rapids andwaterfalls.Today people have iteasy, driving along a smoothhighway in their cars. \nAfter about 240 miles(386 km), \nvisitors come to Fort Osage in Sibley,Missouri.William Clark noted this spot as a good place for afort. In 1808,he came back to build the fortNow it's a museum. \nPeople follow the river from Missouri intoIowa. There, they can camp in one of many Lewisand Clark state parks.Every year,an Iowa parkholds a Lewis and Clark Festival.Visitors picnicand dance to fiddle music. \nThe Iowa park has a model of the keelboat thatLewis and Clark used. This boat was 55 feet(17 m)long. It carried men and supplies.Lewis and Clarkwent upriver against the current. That boat washeavy.Sometimes the men had to walk along theshore and drag the boat with ropes. What anordeal that must have been! \nA modern replica of a keelboat. \nBison and buffalo are a common sight alongthe Lewis and Clark trail. \nThe Missouri River and the cornfields seem togo on forever! After long hours of driving, visitorscross the
