at presenting Re-ligious Truths in the order of their relative im-portance to the sincere non-Catholic.It empha-sizes controverted points in a special manner,while stating the Catholic doctrine clearly.  \nThere are two views of life;the divine and thehuman.The one is true,eternal and immutable;the other false,temporal and changeable.Theformer is in perfect accord with right reason,en-lightened by Faith;the latter,the result of rea-son alone,is invariably distorted by ignorance,prejudice or passion.Catholics take the formerview of life;men of the world,the latter.Be-tween these two classes there are many honest soulsgroping in darkness or semidarkness,seeking theLight.It would be demanding too much to re-quire these to embrace the Catholic view in alldetails before receiving the light of Faith.Theycan,however,be expected to follow the guidanceof right reason and the promptings of grace,andthus advance gradually on the right Way,to therealization of the Truth,and the possession of di-vine Life.  \nFor these reasons The Convert's Catechism doesnot follow the beaten path in imparting religiousinstruction,but is composed on an entirely newplan,to facilitate the labor both of the Inquirerand of the Instructor.Part I insists on the ne-cessity of serving God,as God ordains in Revela-  \ntion,especially as taught by His divine Son.Itshows the necessity of a divine Church,infalliblyguided by God,to teach man how to live as achild of God and heir to the Kingdom of Heaven.When he has once mastered this principle of Di-vine Authority,the Inquirer is prepared to acceptwhatever the Divine Church teaches on Faith,Morals and the Means of Grace,all of which isclearly stated in Part II of this Catechism.Thescope of this little work prevented the Authorfrom entering into the Reason and Authority ofReligion.For additional reading he therefore re-fers the Convert to his“Manual of Theology forthe Laity,”of which six editions have been issuedin three years.
