|\n\n# The Continuity of Kingship\n\nHER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZA-BETH II has a most interest-ing and lengthy family tree, which stretches back to a remoteperiod in the history of the fournations which form the UnitedKingdom,as well as having bloodties with nearly all the royal familiesof Europe. Not only is she a directdescendant of William the Con-queror,but also of the ancient RoyalHouse of England. \nThe Queen's ancestry is tracedback through the great patriot king,Alfred the Great, who heroicallyresisted the Danes to Egbert, who,as king of Wessex, achieved sup-remacy over the other kingdoms, thus laying the foundations of aunited England.Egbert's line goesback through generations of shad-owy kings and princes of Wessex tothe Saxon invader,Cerdic, whofounded his kingdom and died in534.Nearly 1,500 years and fifty-three generations separate him fromQueen Elizabeth, but continuity ofkingship has remained. \nThe family tree stretches for gen-erations beyond Cerdic to remoteSaxon chieftains who held sway in a \nterritory near the Baltic in what isnow Schleswig-Holstein.We hereenter the realms of legend, for it isnot possible to determine the accu-racy of these ancient genealogiesbeyond stating that there may besome truth in them, for they werecarefully handed down from gen-eration to generation, until in the9th century they were preservedfor posterity in the Anglo-SaxonChronicle. \nFor twenty-six years conqueringDanish kings sat upon our throne, but this does not break the RoyalFamily tree. Both The Queen andthe Duke of Edinburgh descendfrom Astrid, sister of the mightyKing Canute. The Danes, once ourfeared enemies, are now closelybound in relationship with ourRoyal Family.Queen Alexandra(consort of Edward VII),PrincessMarina,Duchess of Kent, and theDuke of Edinburgh, all members ofthe royal House of Denmark, haveenriched the Royal Family withViking blood. \nThe Queen descends from thekings of Scotland and Irelandthrough both her parents.King \nGeorge VI was eleventh in descentfrom King James VI of Scotland, who succeeded the first QueenElizabeth as sovereign of England, thus uniting the two kingdoms toform Great Britain.King GeorgeVI also descended from Brian Boru, the most famous king of Ireland, who reigned from 1002 to 1014.The Queen's mother,Queen Eliza-beth,has also royal Scottish andIrish blood. Her direct ancestor,SirJohn Lyon, married Jean, daughterof King Robert II of Scotland, whogranted him the lands of Glamis, still possessed by her family. She isalso the great-great-granddaughterof the Marquess Wellesley(brotherof the great Duke of Wellington),whose lineage is traced through theO'Briens, first family of Ireland,toKing Brian Boru, from whom theytake their name. \nThe Queen's Tudor ancestorsbrought Welsh blood to the RoyalFamily.Henry VII,the first Tudorking, descended from the princes ofNorth and South Wales. His queen,Elizabeth of York, was of royalWelsh lineage from the princes ofNorth Wales through the border
