It explains the theoretical basis of conceits, then surveys common types, including sonneteering, heraldic, emblematic, etymological, typological, and “concetti predicabili,” alongside a specific named example. It also addresses the decline of the conceit, supported by extensive illustrative quotations and references across multiple literatures and languages, ending with bibliography and series of short studies, each dealing with asingle key item,or a group of two or three key items,in ourcritical vocabulary. The purpose of the series differs from thatserved by the standard glossaries of literary terms. Many terms areadequately defined for the needs of students by the brief entries inthese glossaries, and such terms will not be the subjects of studiesin the present series. But there are other terms which cannot bemade familiar by means of compact definitions.Students need togrow accustomed to them through simple and straightforward butreasonably full discussions of them. The purpose of the presentseries is to provide such discussions. \nSome of the terms in question refer to literary movements(e.g.'Romanticism’,'Aestheticism’,etc.),others to literary kinds(e.g.'Comedy’,Epic',etc.),and still others to stylistic features(e.g.Irony’,\"The Conceit’,etc.).Because of this diversity of subject-matter,no attempt has been made to impose a uniform patternupon the studies. But all authors have tried to provide as fullillustrative quotation as possible,to make reference wheneverappropriate to more than one literature,in more than a singlelanguage, and to compose their studies in such a way as to guidereaders towards the short bibliographies in which they have madesuggestions for further reading. \nJohn D.Jump \nUniversity of
