\ns***oron \nTHE COMPLETE POEMS AND TRANSLATIONSOF CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE \nCHRISTOPHER MARLOWE(b.I564)was the eldest son of Canterburyshoemaker John Marlowe, and his wife,Katherine. He was elected tothe King's School Canterbury at the age of fourteen, and within twoyears had secured a scholarship that took him to Corpus Christi College,Cambridge, where he was supposedly destined for a career in the Angli-can Church. He successfully completed his BA examinations in I584,and continued his studies as a candidate for the MA.During this periodhis absences from Cambridge stirred rumors that he was about to flee tothe Catholic seminary at Rheims in France. In I587 the Privy Counciltook the unusual step of persuading the University authorities to grantMarlowe his MA since he had been employed \"in matters touching thebenefit of his country”;this has fuelled speculation that he was workingas a government agent. \nMarlowe probably began his writing career at Cambridge, composingtranslations of Ovid's Amores, and Lucan's Pharsalia,as well as pro-ducing Dido Queen of Carthage for the Children of the Chapel inr586(possibly cowritten with Thomas Nashe). In I587-88 he acquired hisreputation as one of the leading new talents on the London stage withTamburlaine the Great. This was followed by The Jew of Malta(c.I590),Edward the Second, and The Massacre at Paris(both c.I592).His bestknown play,Doctor Faustus, was written in I592.The erotic epyllionHero and Leander was probably written in I592-93 when the plagueforced the theaters to close. \nThroughout this period,Marlowe was frequently in trouble with theauthorities, though for his actions and not his playwriting. He and thepoet Thomas Watson were briefly imprisoned in September r589 fortheir involvement in the death of William Bradley;in I592 Marlowe wasdeported from Flushing,Holland, having been implicated in a counter-feiting scheme. He acquired a dangerous reputation as an atheist, andthe following year he was summoned to appear before the Privy Councilon charges of blasphemy, arising from evidence provided by ThomasKyd,the author of the hugely popular play The Spanish Tragedy. \nSeveral days later,on May 30,I593,Christopher Marlowe was fa-tally stabbed in Deptford. \nSTEPHEN ORGEL is the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor in Humanities atStanford and general editor of the Cambridge Studies in Renaissance
