When usedin conjunction with the physician's knowledge,the CPLM canprovide valuable background information to assist thephysician in rapidly reaching a suitable diagnosis so thathe may prescribe appropriate treatment.  \nIn order to provide maximum services to his patientpopulation as a_whole,and especially to select optimumrecovery paths for individual presentations,today'sphysician is expected to spend a great deal of tinereviewing,selecting,reading,and understanding modernmedical practice.  The tremendous deluge of information withwhich he is presented makes this process at best a neverending(and highly frustrating)battle;and at worst,results in sub-optimal patient care.[1]  Additionally,manyemerging technological advances utilizing computers innedicine provide data in such profusion and detail that thephysician requires assistance in obtaining the bestavailable information,especially when confronted witha disease with which he is unfamiliar.  Figure one  \nillustrates an integrated patient care system which providesdirect access for the physician to current online data andthe resources to manage and utilize it.  The CPLM is animportant element of such a system.  The roles of thevarious other elements in the figure have been previouslydiscussed.[2,3]  \nCPLM in its current form contains a moderately largedatabase of information on clinical pathology laboratorytests and a sampling of infectious disease information.
