of Prayer for Christian Unity 20141 Corinthians 1:1-17The Church of the Undivided Christ \n By Timothy George \nt is ironic, perhaps, that one of the most fervent appealsfor Christian unity found anywhere in the New Testamentoccurs in a letter to one of the most divided churches inthe New Testament. That community of faith is called heresimply“the church of God that is in Corinth”(1:2).Paul willelaborate on the multiple sources for this division through-out the letter, but he begins with a series ofaffirmations.Themembers of this church have been \"sanctified,\"that is,setapart, made holy, consecrated. They are the objects of God'sgrace and peace(1:3).Just as Paul has been “called to be anapostle,\"so they have been.\"called to be saints”(1:1-2). \nChrist,both their Lord and ours”(v.2).Thus at the verybeginning of the letter Paul brings together two themes hewill explore in greater depth-the unity of the church and thelordship of Christ. \n# Thanksgiving(vv.4-9)\n\nBefore launching into the concern that has prompted hisletter,Paul pauses to thank God for this church.Indeed, theyhave been blessed in so many ways. They have been given God'sgrace, enriched, strengthened, and, above all, called into thefellowship(the Greek word is koinonia,“communion”)ofJesus Christ their Lord. This is also a church rich in spiritualgifts.Paul says they are lacking in nothing when it comes tospiritual gifts. The exercise of these gifts is a source of muchblessing in the church but also an occasion for rancor anddivision,as chapters 12-14 make clear. \nThis divine summons has resulted not only in a verticalrelationship between Jesus Christ and individual membersof the church at Corinth but also in a horizontal bond ofcommunion among the members themselves.Throughoutthe letter,Paul repeatedly refers to them as \"brothers andsisters”(2:1;3:1;10:1;12:1;14:6;15:1;16:15).Because ofthe deep personal ties Paul shares with this congregation, hecalls them “my beloved children.\"He reminds them that \"inChrist Jesus Ibecame your father through the gospel”(4:14-15).Because of these deep personal and pastoral ties, the divisionsin the church at Corinth are all the more painful to Paul. \nPaul has a special reason to thank God for the church atCorinth since he was its founding pastor. The story of howPaul first brought the Gospel to Corinth is told in Acts 16-18.In the course of his second missionary journey,Paul had asudden change of itinerary.Instead of continuing east,as \ncontinued on page 2 \nAnother important point is this:While Paul's letter waswritten to a specific congregation with particular problemsand issues,Paul sees this church as vitally connected withother Christian communities throughout the world. He tellsthem directly that the call to holiness they have receivedfrom God is universal in scope and has united them withother believers within the body of Christ-\"together with allthose who in every place call
