ward off the evils of Ottawa polit-thinkand bureaucratic corruption: \nI am not the charismatic leader.l am not the father figure.I am not the authoritarian. \nI am not the objective communicator.I think I am the keeper of the fire in an Iroquois community. \nWho bothered to question whether he made any sense?Clarke hadbeen appointed the first permanent executive director of the Company ofYoung Canadians-did Judy LaMarsh really think up the name?-andhis words would sound good to the children in the autumn of 1966,warmed by the fire of the freedom-preachers and ready to exercise theircommitment to social justiceTheir opportunity had come.Paid by thefederal Government, promised their own Crown Corporation to worksocial change, given the grace by Act of Parliament to tilt at the wrongs ofthe system, the children marched out across the land to undo the mindlesscruelties that defrauded Canadian equality and made victims of the poorand non-white. \nThe CYC still exists -as a paper corpse. \nIt took less than four years for a gang of high-priced incompetents, misfits and charlatans whose actions told the lie of their own emptyrhetoric to smash the Company experiment and,in the process, destroythe faith ofthousands of capable young Canadians who could have beendrawn to participate in an exciting concept but could never stomach theCYC's nonsense. \nlan Hamilton's book is a superb chronicle of how the Children's Crusadewas betrayed-not by the government, which finally brought the non-sense to an end,but by the people most responsible for the agency'soperation:the headquarters staff and members of the governing council. As CYC's Director of Information for two years,Hamilton was witness tothe Ottawa administrative chaos and sinister grapplings for control of theorganization that emasculated most of the volunteers'efforts in the field. He tells an almost unbelievable story.Unfortunately,it will be read bypeople who see Communist conspiracies around every corner. The bookwillstrengthen their beliefs \nWith an annual budget of S2-million for the taking, the Company of \nYoung Canadians was infiltrated-there's no other word for it-by mem-bers of the Front de Liberation du Quebec and other militant separatistgroups,by U.S.draft dodgers,by Maoists, anarchists and aragtag collectionof left-wing opportunists who made no bones about being after the lolly. With only a vaguely defined administrative structure(Clarke had the ideathat somehow humanity and efficiency could only be mutually exclusive),individual staff and council members grabbed power through patronage, then killed each other off with foul acts(witness the associate directorwho was asked by Clarke for his resignation after a rival staff member re-ported he had a homosexual affair with a volunteer)Decision-makingwas deplorable. To give one example, the council repeatedly refused to cutoff funds to two so-called volunteers in Toronto whose \"project\"was thestudy of soil-less plant production, who were furnishing the offices of anunderground newspaper with government equipment, mailing out copiesof the newspaper with an illegal government postage frank and using CYCtelephones to call people in areas such as Baltimore and Hollywood. \nThe CYC was by no means a total disaster. There were good projectsand good volunteers who were successful in spite of the Company's recruit-ment and training programs and clever enough to have little to do with \nOttawa beyond collecting their cheques. There were good staff, most ofthem in the field. If the book tends to be sketchy about the project work,it's because Hamilton, like the rest of th","cbCaipZGbyV5fLtF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipZGbyV5fLtF","pdf",3137225,17,"English","# The Children's Crusade: The Story
