His Holiness John XXIII was followed almostimmediately by an event that has aroused very considerable interesteverywhere in the world:the meeting in Rome of a large number of LatinAmerican bishops and seminary rectors for the purpose of examining the verydisturbing situation of the Church in the other American republics.Theunprecedented nature of this meeting deserves special attention.Wide pub-licity has been given its deliberations and conclusions and the awareness thatall is not well in the Catholic world from Mexico to Argentina has beenbrought home to everyone. \nThe theme has been stressed before.Father John Considine of Mary-knoll raised the question some years ago in his book Call for Forty Thousandin which he urged the thesis that without a substantial increase in the numberof clergy in Latin America these twenty countries were in for a rough timespiritually. The late Pontiff,Pius XII,spoke out on the subject more thanonce to lament the decline in the vitality of Catholic life and the grim prospectfor the future unless a very real overhauling took place.Against this back-ground it may perhaps be useful to point up a few thoughts regarding thereasons why this matter has taken on this air of desperate urgency. \nBut first a few general remarks to set the stage so to speak.Latin Amer-ica is a huge area,of vast deserts, great mountains, enormous expanses ofjungle and faulty communications. It is sparsely populated and lacks thecompactness which in other parts of the world makes the work of the Churchconsiderably easier. In the second place, the slowing down of some aspects ofCatholic life is not always the result of bad religious practice or even theimpact of alien ideas;in measure it is the consequence of a very healthy trendin the great increase of population. We are sometimes prone to underesti-mate the importance of the rate of population growth in terms of the outlookfor the Church.South America is experiencing the fastest increase of popu-lation of any part of the world and herein lies to a very real degree the basiccause of the distress.Vocations and the general development of the life of \nthe Church are not keeping pace with the expanding population and within ageneration or two unless adequate measures are taken the gap will be evenwider. \nBut aside from this demographic consideration, just what is wrong withLatin America,Catholicity-wise?Have millions of its people suddenly goneoff the deep end and fallen into apostasy?Have other currents of thoughtswept them up and cut them loose from the Church? The problem is not assimple as that.Every cultural area of the world where the Church has longbeen identified with the national life reveals characteristics that are deeprooted in history and custom. There is a very real danger of judging a situa-tion out of context and against the background of experiences that applyelsewhere. The first and foremost thought I would suggest on this point isthat the state of religion in Latin America not be interpreted as though Boliviawere Iowa or Honduras Wisconsin. \nAmerican Catholics are properly alert to the anxiety that the problem ofLatin America is causing its own bishops, the Holy See and,by the nature ofthings, nations like our own where Catholic resources are so considerable.ButI would urge, before anything is done by Catholic lay bodies of this country, that the closest attention be given to the facts of life of the republics of thishemisphere.Back in the years before the last war and during the war perioditself,Americans went overboard for Latin America to an extent that wasmore froth than substance with the inevitable result that after the conclusionof hostilities and there was no more danger of Nazis invading the hump ofBrazil, interest subsided with the same rapidity with which i","cbCaiex1l6jrPWaw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiex1l6jrPWaw","pdf",376368,"English","# The Challenge of Latin America\n## The Rome Meeting
