Written against a culture that circulates rumors rapidly, it emphasizes prayer, forgiveness, and the dignified meaning of suffering and dying. sheer goodness, became the mentorfor many unchurched and frightened, whohoped against hope to live gracefully withsorrow, and to learn to die a dignifieddeath. In an age that seeks the quick wayout,a dying priest gave testimony on thesacredness oflife,no matter how close tothe end,no matter how wretched the agonymight be. \nwinter by personally letting him know that Iharbored no ill feelings toward him and topray with him for his physical and spiritualwel-being.Hereplied that he wanted to meetwith me to apologize for the embarrassmentand hurt hehad caused. In other words, weboth sought reconciliation. \nThere is something within the modernpsyche that gives greater credence to elec-tronically produced\"information;\"once theimage, the word—even if questionable—isplaced in the claws of the mas media, there'slittle reason to scrutinize it too carefully.Rumors and accusations careen at breakneckspeed toward a wasteland of unproven scan-dal.It's all so quickly circulated, and just asquickly believed. \n\"Steven's apology was simple, direct, deeply moving.I accepted his apology.I toldhim that I had prayed for him every day andwould continue to pray for his health andpeace of mind… \nPalm 112 sums up the destiny of thosewho fear God:\"They are gracious, compassionate and good.An evil report they shallnot fear.Their hearts are steadfast,trust-ing in the Lord.\"The final test of theirdecency shall only be known with the passage o time.For,\"The just shall be in ever-lasting remembrance.\"Joseph Bernadinseems well on the way to this perpetuallight.小 \n“..I reached into my briefcase andbrought out a Bible that Ihad purchased forhim the day before.Itold himI would not beoffended ifhe did notaccept it.With tears inhis eyes,he reached for the Bible and held ittightly to his chest. \nSome may still recall the disturbing, poignant and(thank goodness)ultimatelyremarkable story of a man falsely accused,a\"man of the cloth,\"as the saying goes, who, back in 1993,was charged with a sexualaffront by another man,who was a youngseminarian at the time the abuse allegedlytook place. The cleric in question,CardinalJoseph Bernadin of Chicago, died lastNovember, three years to the month afterthat awful tale began its destructive journeyvia the television screen,to even the mostremote corners of the global village.Prurience knows no frontiers, especiallywhen its object is the fallen of noble rank orhigh degree. As for the accuser,Steven Cook,he died in 1995,but not before recanting hispublic testimony, and not before gaining anintimation of the \"peace that surpasseth allhuman understanding.\"For the one heaccused took to heart that mostvexing imper-ative:Be reconciled to one another.Throughtheir miraculous encounter, two dying men(although it would be months before CardinalBernadin's cancer diagnosis)were restoredto spiritual health—the heart-sick Cardinal;the guilt-ridden younger man, longing to barehis soul.Joseph Bernadin and Steven Cookbecame the paradigm of the viability ofChristian life-forgivenessand reconciliation, its essential oxygen. \n\"Then,I took out of the briefcase a chalicethat someone, whom I had never met, hadsent with the request tha I offer a Mass forSteven.…Again, with tears in his eyes, hesaid,Please let's celebrate Mass.'Never, inmy 43 years as a priest.have I witnessed amore profound reconciliation. The words Iam using to tell you this story cannot beginto describe the power of God's grace that wasat work that afternoon. It was a manifestationof God's love, forgiveness and healing that Iwill never forget. \nBeing an octogenarian becomes me.Ihave transcended the universal wolf, edgycommittees and the ravages of concupis-cence.A few new blessings have recentlybeen added—contemplation, museum meandering and reveling in Mahler's music.Iechoan ancient joy of King David:“Lord, youtaught me when
