from the French by Rev.Joseph M.Lynch) \nThe world is at times shaken to its foundations by thosemighty forces which we designate by the general and somewhatambiguous term of“crisis.”In such periods of,economic andsocial upheaval, pessimists see the end of all things. The indif-ferent and sluggish find therein fresh reason for their lack ofactivity. But the far-visioned—those who anticipate and am-bition the extension of God's kingdom and who know fromexperience the methods of the Divine Teacher understand thatover the present chaos hovers the Spirit of the Lord—Dominusreplevit orbem terrarum,—The Spirit of the Lord filled theworld. \nCrisis \nTo say that the world is in a crisis is to affirm the simpletruth.Instead however of weeping over smouldering ruins, wewould better serve our interests by making plans for the“Cityof tomorrow.”The world of tomorrow,it seems, will be crossedby two opposing currents.Universalism resting upon the solid-arity of the human family and Nationalism sprouting andstrengthened by the awakening of racial consciousness.Theold notions of time and space have within the last half centurybeen radically affected by modern inventions.Asia is todaynearer New York than was San Francisco two centuries ago.We have been stirred unknowingly by tremendous realities andthe new forces that are rapidly changing the face of the world.Hence every world problem that is not viewed in a world settingis improperly presented, and therefore insoluble. The missionaryproblem is no exception. \nTomorrow,when the roar of the last cannon has resoundedon the battle front, when the sun of peace will have dispelled thewar clouds, when the wings of the aviators shall have crossed in \nthe sky forming a rainbow of hope and joy, when the mightyocean cruisers have straightened their zig-zag course in midocean—the masses of people will realize better their inter-dependence.And a conviction in human solidarity, and mutual helpfulness, will form the basis of relations among the members of the humanfamily. \nIt is to be hoped that there will be no further effort to revisethe old formula of a militarized equilibrium inspired by fearand mutual distrust. For it is in mutual understanding andadmiration for the respective geniuses of peoples that this equil-ibrium should be sought. \nIf the old stone walls that once divided peoples have beenlevelled, new ones have been raised.Strange phenomenon!Inproportion as the press and travel and the thousand contacts ofmodern inventions make for a wider sympathy among men, acorresponding growth of excessive nationalism has developed.Mightier even than the barriers of race there arise deep-seatedpowerful,and spiritual antipathies.Immense groups of the hu-man family are becoming conscious of their historic past,con-scious of the injustices of which they have been,or believe them-selves to have been the vicitms, conscious of their own nativeabilities, and all that represents the material efforts of theirancestors.Peoples whose proximate extinction was foretold to-day are demanding a new ideal of life from within their owncivilizations. \nIntellectual Growth \nIn the last 20 years India has founded 10 universities.Japanwith its school population of 15 millions has the highest percen","cbCaieYtj184LQWC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieYtj184LQWC","pdf",947984,24,"English","# The Catholic
