evidence that they evermet. One was Karl Marx and the other Bishop Pecci,Nuncio to Belgium, later Pope Leo XIII.Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto and DasKapital, the sacred scriptures of the Communists.Leo XIII wrote RerumNocarum, later elaborated and explained by Pius XI in QuadragesimoAnno. In May of this year we celebrated the sixty-fifth anniversary ofthe former encyclical and the twenty-ffth of the latter.Together thesegreat documents constitute the Church's answer to the social question. \nBoth Marx and Pecci were widely traveled men. They saw at firsthand the intolerable burden that weighted down the workingman.Underlaissez-faire capitalism the worker was practically a slave. He was valuedless than the machine at which he labored. He had little or no leisurefor recreation, family, education,or religion.Even his wife and childrenwere often forced to work long hours at back-breaking labor in minesand factories. \nThe reaction of the two men to what they saw was completely dif-ferent.Marx was angry, bitter, cynical. He called for hatred-of manfor man and class for class. He advocated violence and destruction.Histheories were put into effect in the Russian Revolution of 1917 andtoday blight a sixth of the earth. \nLeo and Pius advocated a program based on the Gospels.Instead ofhatred, they called for love;instead of class warfare, class co-operation.They condemned the abuses of capitalism but rejected socialism.Theydefended the right of private property and free enterprise within justlimits, but condemned excessive individualism as well as collectivism. They proclaimed in no uncertain terms the natural right of the workerto organize unions. They condemned statism but called on the state toprotect and defend the weak and defenseless and to legislate for thesocial welfare of the citizen.Only a study of these great documents cangive a notion of their tremendous scope and value. \n## Teachings Met Opposition\n\nWe cannot deny that the two
