RegionLibrary Council;Past President;Co-chair of development committee.Member,ALA and NELA. \n## What should CLA's top long-term and\n\nshort-term priorities be?Libraries have \ngot to change their image and beviewed as essential institutions.Inorder for this to happen, two compo-nents have to be in place:education oflibrarians and marketing. \nI would put forth two long-termpriorities for CLA with short-termcomponents to achieve those goals. \n March 1994 \n1)Facilitate the education of presentand future librarians in order to deliverlibrary service that is valued as essen-tial In the lives of Connecticut'scitizens. To achieve that,I recom-mend a strong working relationshipwith all educational facilities thatteach library and information technol-ogy courses.I would encourageworkshops on leading-edge topicssuch as marketing, economic develop-ment,technology literacy, and creativeapproaches to work. \nI would work very hard with the StateLbrary on the implementation ofstandards and explore tying them tocompensation.Standards give us theopportunity to reach for a tangiblegoal,to rethink our mission, and toreexamine ways of operating. \n2)Educate the public on how informa-tion delivered through libraries isessential in their lives;essential fordemocracy to thrive;essential formaking informed decisions. To educatethe public,we have to be secure in ourown measurement of success throughsuch tools.Without first putting ourown operations in order,we cannotsuccessfully market a product. \nThe\"public,\"takes many forms. It ispeople in their role as citizen, but also \norganizations such as the Departmentsof Labor and Economic Developmentwhose publics we serve. It is thepolicy makers of corporations,of thestate legislature,of the individualtowns and places of higher education. It is other industries such as publicrelations professionals and people inthe media who influence the public. \nCLA needs to form alliances with thesepeople through a concerted marketingplan such as the one underway withMintz and Hoke.If our educationalefforts have been successful,we will bebetter equipped to market the profes-sion as individual emissaries as well asthrough group efforts. \nConnecticut is fortunate to have ahighly literate,forward-thinkingpopulation,one that holds libraries inhigh regard. With careful planning anda great deal of support from the manyfine professionals in the state,I wouldbe pleased to lead us toward the year2000,working toward the respect andrecognition that libraries need to beessential in citizens'lives. \nVice President/President ElectSherry Hupp \nDirector,Hamden Library \nMLS,State University of New York atAlbanyAB,Mount Holyoke College \n### Professional
