\nTim and Julyan Reid provide all the answers in \nStudent Power and the Canadian Campus, but they have pulledtogether a fascinating and important book which does tell youwhat's going on and does provide at least hints as to reasons. \nThe Reid's credentials for this task are impeccable.Tim Reid \nhas been, variously,a member of the Students AdministrativeCouncil at the University of Toronto,a Rhodes Scholar,a profes-sional football player(Hamilton Tigercats),and a professor ofEconomics at York University. He is now an Ontario MPP forScarborough East and official Liberal critic for the Departmentof University Affairs.Julyan,Tim's wife,is an able and exper-ienced researcher and writer(she is also, coincidentally, thedaughter of Edmund Fancott, author of The Shell Game). \nStudent Power and the Canadian Campus is a kind of anthol-ogy.It consists largely of reprints of pieces which have appearedelsewhere. But it also contains a number of pieces written special-ly for the book, plus connecting and explanatory essays by bothTim and Julyan Reid. \nThe result is a book which, for the first time, presents acomplete and comprehensible picture of what is going on in ourschools and colleges.George Woodcock is present with his now-famous article on the fascist characteristics of the “New Left”and Robert Rae,a Toronto radical, appears with a counter-attack on Woodcock.Stanley Gray is in the book with a remark-ably cool and even amused piece on his struggle with the admin-istration at McGill.Claude Bissell and John Deutsch of Torontoand Queens respectively argue for democratic reform on campus.Student radicals from a variety of places demand instant andtotal reform and even the absolute destruction of our system ofhigher education. \nThe book is edited with the kind of skill that makes it notonly enlightening but even occasionally amusing.Mel Watkins'left-leaning account of the mass sit-in protesting Dow(napalm)Chemical's recruiting on the Toronto campus is followed by asmooth, brief press release from Dow in which the company ex-plains why it will continue to manufacture napalm.A story on ahigh school protest demonstration ","cbCaikG0SgyNlPaq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikG0SgyNlPaq","pdf",2960422,17,"English","# Student Power and the Canadian Campus\n## From apathy to protest\n## What the Reid anthology offers\n## Key episodes and arguments\n## Serious risks and campus outlook","[{\"question\":\"How does the article compare past student attitudes with current campus activism?\",\"answer\":\"It contrasts earlier periods when students focused on jobs and comfort with a later surge of political protest and campus disruption.
