MATLAW","","Literary study examining how The Brothers Karamazov uses quotations, allusions, and “literary echoes” to shape narrative structure and meaning. The author frames reading levels in terms of plot, ethics, history, and theology, while emphasizing that the literal level remains primary. Characters are analyzed through dynamic relation and recurring references, with key figures such as Voltaire, Shakespeare (Hamlet), and Schiller used to organize patterns of rationalism, self-doubt, and romantic excess. the commonplace;to write atheodicy in terms of parricide and sexual rivalry;to deal withsocial theory as theology and with theology as reason;to turnpsychology upon itself and treat it with elaborate irony;to expresscharacters'most profound and essential selves in stylized, literaryterms;these suggest a mulitiplicity of realities and a multiplicityof readings. It is possible to read the book on the four levelssuggested in Dante's letter to Can Grande (literal,moral,alle-gorical,anagogical)as plot, ethics, history, theology.Indeed,it issometimes mandatory to read it so.Yet the fundamental level isalways the literal, and with it I am primarily concerned.'Toborrow an image from painting,Duchamp's Nu descendant unescalier, one isolates and analyzes the refractions and multiplaneddistortions not because they are in themselves remarkable, butbecause each illuminates and highlights the central, moving figurefrom another perspective. An appropriate image, moreover, sincein this novel everything is in dynamic relation to something else.In the large as in the small,in thematic as in expository method, the Brothers Karamazov affiliates each character with the rest.An inquiry into the structure of the book might well begin with theliterary references embodied in it,for the Brothers Karamazov isone of the most “literary”books ever written. Each characterutilizes quotations in a different way, depending upon his particularinterests and his own interpretation.Dostoevskij, however, controlsand organizes literary echoes so that patterns may be seen:thethree figures who are most frequently cited,Voltaire,Shakespeare(Hamlet)and Schiller come to represent for the reader rationalism, \nself-doubt and examination, and romantic excess and ethicsrespectively. We must here distinguish between direct quotationor allusion and the vaguer concept of the “literary echo.”Aliterary reference can appear with or without quotation marks, but always points to a specific text;an echo renders something interms which remind one -justifiably-of a comparable scene orconcept elsewhere. Thus we may say,in view of the extensive useof Schiller, that the Legend of the Grand Inquisitor echoesSchiller's Don Carlos (particularly the Marquis Posa);in viewof the use of Shakespeare, the scene between Father Ferapontand the visiting monk dealing with the heretical distinctionbetween holy spirit and holy ghost echoes the scene betweenHamlet and Polonius on the shape of clouds.More generally, theBrothers Karamazov echo Hamlet since each involves the murderof a father and in each the character most centrally involved withthe crime has come home directly from a university.Mitja's rushingto Grušen'ka's house after killing Grigorij is a counterpart of theknocking at the gate in Macbeth.Even in
