The foreword asks readers to respond to a “boy problem” in their town by identifying responsible local leadership (e.g., Big Brother figures) and offers examples of families struggling with a wayward boy. It frames the “black sheep” case, argues why some “most worth while” boys go wrong, and introduces questions of responsibility and practical remedies through village play and pernission of the Deineator. \nFOREWORD \nAre you worrying about the boy problem in your town?Read the fol-lowing artiele by one who knows the village life. The plan proposed is forany Big Brotherof boys,be he minister, school teacher, principal or busi-ness man. \nThere is such a man in your community-find him and put him on thejob. In many communities the school building offers a more practical basisof operation than the Church. \nA mother said to me the other day,“I don't know what I shall dowith my boy.He hangs ou nights. He goes around with bad boys.I somctimes smell smoke on his clothes, and yesterday he was ar-rested for taking some old junk he thought was discarded and tryingto scll it.He seldom goes to church, and says his Sabbath-school is adreary plaee.God knows I have tried to do everything to bring upmy boy to be an honorable man.Yes,I have seen the pastor of thechureh, but he says he doesn't know what to do.\"How manymothers are burdencd with that sume story! How many achinglhearts we never know! And this was a boy brought up in what wecall“a good Christian home.” \nA kindly father asked me to dine with him one nightAfter themeal he lead me tohis study. Then he closed the door, took from hispocket a letter and having opened it,he said,\"I want to talk to youabout my boy·I don't want even my wife to know of it.I am a*pecialist.I ean diagose a discase, but I can't tell why a good, healthy, normal boy should do as mine has.”He gave me the letterto read. Here is the story:Father sends the boy to a school in theeountry to get him out of the city.Boy finds attractive companyin two or three bad boys.Bcgins to smoke, becomes“sporty”一 \nmoney allowances insufficient for his need.A grocery store whichboy hangs around is robbed.Boy is suspected.Father is notified. That's what the letter contained. \nThe Black Sheep. \nI am not speakingof the neglected city boy,the street urchin, thebootblack, the newsboy.I am speaking of the boy who has a goodhome and every advantage in home training, but turns out to be the\"back sheep;\"the boy that brings premature wrinkles to moth-er's brow and many of the gray hairs to father's head that nevercame from business worry. He is the boy you hear least about, forhe is most shielded by loving parents. There is an apology for theneglected boy,but not for this one.The evils of the neglected boyare apparent and are most talked about. The problems of this boyare olscure and litle studied except by parents. If we could knowthe seerets of family life we would be surprised at the number of theseboys. \nThe Boy Most Worth While. \nThis boy is the most valuable of wayward boys. The well-nur-tured,well-educated,well-developed wayward boy is not the half-starved,stunted,ignorant,neglected boy.The boy most worthsaving is the boy with greatest natural endowment. There is prob-ably an inereasing product of wayward boys. There are severalreasons for it:Parental authority is less arbitrary. We do not hear80 much of the grandfather rule,“Children should be scen and notheard.\"Chureh authority is wofully lax.No longer doe","cbCaiaSzuzb8lIvD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaSzuzb8lIvD","pdf",318606,"English","en",105,"#
