Drawing on Basho and other cultural references, it argues that true artistic excellence requires attunement to nature across the seasons and overcoming a “barbarian” or “animal” mind. passages in Japaneseliterature, the poet Basho wrote at the beginning of hisKnapsack Notebook: \nSaigyo in poetry,Sogi in linked verse,Sesshu inpainting,Rikyu in the tea ceremony——the spiritthat moves them is one spirit.Achieving artisticexcellence, each holds one attribute in common:each remains attuned to nature throughout the fourseasons.Whatever is seen by such a heart and mindis a flower, whatever is dreamed is a moon.Only abarbarian mind could fail to see the flower;only ananimal mind could fail to dream a moon. The firsttask for each artist is to overcome the barbarian oranimal heart and mind,to become one with nature. \nAt a glance it may seem peculiar to the Westernmind that one of Japan's greatest poets would equatethe simple tea ceremony with the best classical verseand painting. It's not exactly like comparing a perfectlatte with an exquisite painting by Morris Graves orVan Gogh, but the comparison serves to present Zen \nmind at its best. One may address any art form by con-sidering\"right mindfulness\"and“right practice”essen-tial to any art;thus, the art of making coffee and theart of painting are direct expressions of mindfulnessand practice.The\"simplicity\"of the tea ceremony isas complex as the richest painting or poem, and likepainting and poetry, the ceremony draws upon cen-turies of tradition in order to arrive at what is fullypresent.Nearly a hundred years ago,Okakura Kakuzowrote: \nThose of us who know not the secret of properlyregulating our own existence on this tumultuoussea of foolish troubles which we call life are con-stantly in a state of misery while vainly trying toappear happy and contented. We stagger in the at-tempt to keep our moral equilibrium, and see fore-runners of the tempest in every cloud that floats onthe horizon.Yet there is joy and beauty in the roll ofthe billows as they sweep outward toward eternity. Why not enterinto their spirit,or,like Liehtse, rideupon the hurricane itself? He only who has livedwith the beautiful can die beautifully. \nTo\"die beautifully\"is to makes one's life a part of agreater work of art.\"Beauty and ugliness have origins,\"Lao Tzu warns, and they are less a matter of receivedopinion than a consequence of acting upon whatever is \nVHII INTRODUCTION","cbCaiaasEIqVov6I","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaasEIqVov6I","pdf",2208333,108,"English","# INTRODUCTION\n## Artistic excellence and
