One day *M1 has bad diarrhoea and does his business behind the house.  \nA moment later the animals come and walk in it. The animals bring the dirt near the place where *M1’s wife, *F1, is cooking and where *M2, their baby, is playing on the ground.  \nWithout washing her hands, *F1 picks up the baby which is crying, and then she serves the food on to the plates.  \nDo you see how the germs from the diarrhoea get on to the food?  \nThe whole family eat the food and they all catch diarrhoea. Always use a proper pit latrine, preferably one ventilated to stop flies or a WC, and always wash your hands before preparing or serving food. Don’t let children play on the ground that animals use.  \nA well that is not kept clean and tidy from rubbish on the outside and that is not securely covered will allow germs to get into the water. Keep your well clean and covered, and do not let animals come near it.  \n*M3 drinks contaminated water from the river, and gets diarrhoea.  \n*M3, don’t drink the river water!  \nIf you leave food uncovered, flies will land on it. Flies carry germs on their bodies and feet. If you eat these germs with your food, you will get ill. Food which is not well cooked will have germs in it, as the warmth makes them grow. The food has to be very hot to kill the germs.  \nCook food well and eat it hot, or leave it to go cold. Cover it from flies. Ifyou heat it up again, make sure it is well heated through before you eat it. Germs like to be warm, but not hot or cold!  \nFood that has gone bad will also give you diarrhoea, or even worse illnesses. You might even die.  \nIf food is suspect, don’t chance it!
