of majorplayers coming into the United States fiber optic marketplace.Pirelli has made its entryin dramatic fashion--announcing that it will be a major financial partner in the Litelnetwork.Pirelli will also supply and install all the cable for Litel. \nAs we reported(F/LN,March 30,p.1),Litel intends to construct an 1190-mile net-work serving the Midwest and costing $33.38 million.A Litel official told us this weekthe company is talking to a railroad and a major utility company about providingright-of-way for the network. \nVarious officials told us Pirelli will not be the major owner in the system.But,\"Pirelli has already purchased a portion of the system and has signed a letter of intentto purchase a substantial portion,\"one source told us.Pirelli will also provide theengineering design work for the system. \nPirelli officials characterized the deal as the first of a series that will stun thefiber optic community.Pirelli is slated to receive additional fiber optic contractscovering the voice, video and data arenas,we were told. \nPirelli has been gearing up for the entry for more than a year and now producesoptical fiber cable in British Columbia and Wallingford,Conn. The company also has anelectronics division in Wallingford that consults with Pirelli fiber optic operationsshops around the world on a periodic basis. \nIf the Wallingford address sounds familiar,it is because it is also the home ofTimes-Fiber Communications. The Pirelli fiber electronics group is headed by A.(Dyke)Diechmueller, who was instrumental in the design of the Times-Fiber Mini-Hub.OtherTimes-Fiber personnel have also taken the walk to Pirelli due in large part to Times-Fiber's reduced involvement with fiber optics. \nPirelli has recruited Bob Cohen, former headed of Mohawk Optical Cable,to head itsmarketing effort in North America. Pirelli has also enlisted John Morrocco, formerly ofPhalo Optical Systems Division. \n## 22 UTILITIES ALREADY HAVE FIBER PLANS OR SYSTEMS,UTC FINDS\n\nThe Utilities Telecommunications Council--which has been encouraging utilities toimplement fiber optic systems since last year--has developed a list of 22 utilities in theUnited States that now have fiber optic systems in place or intend to install such systemssoon. \nUTC General Counsel Charles Meehan told us that utilities began using optical fiberto combat environmental problems.More recently, however, there has been a trend towardusing it to deal with growing capacity problems.Meehan predicted that fiber use wil1cont inue to grow among utilities, although he 1abeled the industry \"very conservative\"andslow to accept change. The utilities involved include: \nAmerican Electric Power, with headquarters in Canton,Ohio, this year will constructa trial installation 6-18miles long that will use composite static cable(ground wirewith integral fiber cable)and single-mode fiber. They may also employ WDM. \nSEC Reports…… ……………………5Fiber/Laser Beams…………… …6Japanese Fiber Dumping Predicted… …8 \nArkansas Power and Light,Little Rock, already has a 1570 fiber meter link thattransmits voice, video and data. The system is being used to connect an AP&L telephonesystem to a microwave system.ITT FS-1 equipment is being used. \nBaltimore Gas and Electric Co.has a 5.6-km fiber system using overhead cable sec-tions,constructed on 115 kv and 33 kV lines,as well as underground sections. The systemhas been in operation since May 1981.Additional installations are being studied. \nCarolina Power and Light,Raleigh,N.C.,has installed 8 systems since 1980 and isengineering 2 additional systems.Al1 installations are at generat i","cbCaibXfBDa3GNej","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibXfBDa3GNej","pdf",2940064,"English","# Highlights Inside\n## LITEL DEAL BRINGS PIRELLI INTO U.S.FIBER OPTIC MARKETPLACE PICTURE\n## 22 UTILITIES ALREADY HAVE FIBER PLANS OR SYSTEMS,UTC FINDS","[{\"question\":\"What is the main focus of the biweekly report?\",\"answer\":\"The report covers optical fiber and laser technology developments, emphasizing industry highlights and major deployment updates.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the report describe Pirelli’s involvement in the Litel network?\",\"answer\":\"Pirelli is presented as a financial partner and as providing supply, installation, and engineering design work for the fiber system.\"},{\"question\":\"What does UTC identify about utilities’ adoption of fiber?\",\"answer\":\"UTC reports that 22 U.S. utilities already have fiber systems in place or plan to install them soon, driven first by environmental concerns and increasingly by capacity needs.\"}]","The Biweekly Report on Optical Fiber and Laser Technology - Highlights Inside | PDF",1790706735,23]
