The system wil1 be interactive with 91 local distributionnetworks that M/A-Com is building along the route.Te M/A-Com effort is geared primarilyto providing services for Amtrak.MCI has signed a 20-year lease agreement with Amtrak touse the right of way. \nThere is plenty of capacity to carry video and data along the 44-fiber system,Wal-ters noted.Price of the contract was not disclosed. \n## ...SEES NO CONFLICT WITH SNET/CSX LETTER OF INTENT\n\nMCI officials told us they see no conflict concerning their agreement with CSX to use \n4,000 miles of railroad right of way for fiber optic routing, despite a recently announcedletter of intent between CSX and Southern New England Telephone(SNET)to explore thefeasibility of jointly building a fiber optic system. \nMhile MCI's Tobin told us \"this kind of thing was not anticipated,\"he noted that pro-visions in the csx/MCI agreement preclude any upstaging even if CSX and SNET were to forma partnership.Tobin noted that--while exact details of MCI's 4,000 miles of routing withCSX will not be unveiled before June--routes wil1 link St.Louis,New Orleans and Chicago,as wel1 as Cleveland,Detroit,Atlanta and other key cities. \n\"From a competitive standpoint,we don't view SNET as a competitor,\"a second MCIsource told us.The source characterized CSX as \"a very progressive, ambitious outfit,\"and said MCI's negotiations with cSX \"were very rugged.\" \nAttorney Mark Aron, who is handling the csX/SNET negotiations for CSX,told us that\"everything at this point is very vague--this is a very vague letter and a very vague pro-ject.\"He said negotiations at this point are\"in the early stages of exploration.\"SNET spokesman Mike McCann told us,however, that SNET \"is seriously looking at this \nFIBER/LASER NEWS,May 13,1983 \njoint communications venture.\"He noted that many potential options could develop from it,including the sharing of some rights-of-way by both MCI and SNET. \nOne item SNET will study in upcoming weeks is whether it needs a fiber optic networkthat would stretch into the Middle At1antic,Midwest and Southeast,McCann said.SNET hastaken an aggressive posture with fiber optics, having installed it in several local loopsin Connecticut. \nMcCan","cbCaia1DQHnI09C2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaia1DQHnI09C2","pdf",3349203,"English","# MCI names Fujitsu to provide intercity electronics for N.Y.-Washington route\n# ...sees no conflict with SNET/CSX letter of intent\n# …and MCI is identified as one of the potential BART tunnel users\n# Times-Fiber establishes joint licensing agreement with SAT, CIT-Alcatel","[{\"question\":\"What deal does MCI award to Fujitsu for intercity fiber optic trunking?\",\"answer\":\"Fujitsu is set to provide the electronics for MCI’s major intercity fiber optic trunking between New York City and Washington, D.C.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the report describe the planned data transmission and fiber spacing on the MCI route?\",\"answer\":\"The system is described as transmitting light at 405 Mbps over a 1300 nm wavelength, with repeaters spaced approximately every 20 miles.\"},{\"question\":\"What related telecom fiber plans are discussed for CSX, SNET, and the BART tunnel?\",\"answer\":\"The report covers MCI’s agreement using CSX railroad right-of-way for fiber routing while noting exploratory activities between CSX and SNET, and it lists multiple companies interested in running optical fiber through the BART tunnel joining San Francisco and Oakland.\"}]","The Biweekly Report on Optical Fiber and Laser Technology - Highlights inside - Industry updates | PDF",1791865411,23]
