He estimated M/A-Com's involvement in the venture maystretch to $40 million in the next several years,and wondered if the return is there,considering the interest of Western Electric,Siemens,ITT and Japanese producers.  \nAlthough M/A-Com officials refused to discuss it,there must also be concern aboutCorning suing Valtec,claiming patent right infringement.Corning has won similar suitsin the past.Most of the cable produced at Valtec's West Boylston,Mass.,factory is forU.s.consumption,and Corning has established patent rights in this country.Corning andSiemens are joint partners in Siecor,the largest fiber producing venture in the U.S.  \nThere has been \"tremendous pricing pressure\"in the cable industry lately,a M/A-Com official told us.\"Our margins in producing coaxial cable have also been affected.\"  \nThese have not been the best of times for M/A-Com generally,and long-term invest-ments with short-term setbacks obviously do not look as attractive now as perhaps they didwhen the joint venture was undertaken several years ago.The company suffered a dismalApri1-June 1982 quarter,reporting a 90%decrease in net income.Earnings for the quarterending Oct.1 were considered flat.The company recent1y reorganized extensively.  \nYet with Artel's help,the company is making significant inroads into the opticalfiber electronics market.
