Eliot, W.B. Yeats, and the Occult","","The Birth of Modernism examines how myth appears throughout modernist literature, arguing that its prevalence derives at least in part from occult beliefs that myths preserve records of contact between mortals and the “au delà.” The book presents a radical revision of the standard view of literary modernism, moving beyond earlier secular, aesthetic interpretations of works such as The Waste Land and The Cantos. Drawing on the author’s research experience and subsequent re-examination prompted by occult-oriented correspondents, the study connects modernism to esoteric tradition and textual practice, including Ezra Pound’s editing.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-birth-of-modernism-ezra-pound-ts-eliot-wb-yeats-and-the-occult/319921/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/the-birth-of-modernism-ezra-pound-ts-eliot-wb-yeats-and-the-occult/319921.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Quinn","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-09-20",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",11,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What main argument does The Birth of Modernism make about myth in modernist literature?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"It argues that the ubiquity of myth in modernist literature must be attributed at least in part to occult belief, where myths are treated as records of contact between mortals and the “au delà.”","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"How does the book revise the “standard view” of literary modernism?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"It presents a radical revision, challenging conventional assumptions that modernism primarily belongs to twentieth-century scientific materialism and that mythic elements are merely formal or thematic devices.",{"name":70,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":71},"Which modernist authors and works does the preface explicitly connect to this study?",{"text":72,"@type":64},"The preface highlights Ezra Pound and works such as The Cantos, as well as T.S. literary modernism. When I wrote A Light fromEleusis:A Study of the Cantos of Ezra Pound in the mid-197os,I heldthe conventional view that literary modernism belonged to twentieth-century scientific materialism. On this view, the mythological andEleusinian elements of such representative modernist works as TheWaste Land and The Cantos were considered to be factitious formaland thematic devices. This aestheticization of the apparently mysticalor noumenal content of literary modernism was achieved throughthe tactic of Joyce's so-called mythological method. The argument ofThe Birth of Modernism is that the ubiquity of myth in modernistliterature must be attributed at least in part to the occult belief thatmyths represent a record of contact between mortals and the au delà. \nI would probably have persisted in a secular and aesthetic readingof modernist discourse to this day were it not for a series of phonecalls and letters I received in 198o from William French of
