THE AUTHOR \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nThe year 1789 saw the advent of the French Revolutionwith its tidings of \"liberty,equality,fraternity\"to all mankind.Count forward one hundred and fifty years and you arrive atthe year of grace 1939 and the outbreak of the present War.The intervening period is crowded with movements and eventsof deepest significance to civilization.History ran its coursewith ever increasing acceleration:from the fall of the Bastilleand the proclamation of the Rights of Man through the Napo-leonic era;the spread of democracy;the rise of nationalism;thetriumphal progress of science;the Industrial Revolution;thegrowth of modern Imperialism;the evolution of internationalSocialism;the cataclysm of the World War with its aftermathof Bolshevism and Reaction;down to the rise of the concen-tration camp, the spread of totalitarianism, and the suppressionof liberty over the major part of Europe. \nThe modern history of the Jews has been bound up withthese developments. With the fall of the Bastille fell the wallsof the Ghetto. The doctrine of the Rights of Man was appliedwith the logical precision of the French mind to all civilizedmen,Jews included. The Emancipation of the Jews fromoppressive restrictions was imposed on Western Europe by thetriumph of these ideas and the victory of French arms.TheRevolution was the Messiah. It sounded for the Jews the knellof bigotry, the end of martyrdom, and announced the dawn offreedom and reconciliation. \nBut this freedom did not come to the Jews as a right won byvictorious struggle. It was a conditional gift. The boon ofequality was extended not to the Jewish People in its corporate \ncapacity but to the Jews as individuals. It was grounded onthe assumption that Jewish nationality was non-existent.Theprice of Emancipation was assimilation and the disappearanceof the Jewish People as a distinct entity among the nationsThe condition was acepted.A high assembly of French Jewry, summoned by Napoleon, solemnly renounced Jewish nationalaspirations and reduced Judaism to its purely religious terms.None but a religious bond was to exist henceforth betweenJews. The idea was embraced by the Jewries of WesternEurope and partly in Eastern Europe as well.Henceforth theywould be Frenchmen,Magyars,Germans—of the\"Mosaic per-suasion.”In language, dress and manners—in their verythoughts and sentiments they would be wholly at one with theirfellow countrymen, indistinguishable for all practical purposesfrom the peoples among whom they dwelt. \nThough the achievement of complete equality was a gradualprocess, the Jews adhered faithfully to the bargain they hadstruck.Assimilation was pursued with religious zeal,degener-ating often into sheer flight from the Jewish fold.Avidly Jewsseized upon their new-found opportunities, penetrating intoevery sphere of cultural and economic life. They prospered androse to eminence. They gave freely of their blood on the fieldof battle, and contributed imperishable names to science and art,to social progress,to politics and statesmanship. But the intox-icating honeymoon was brief, the millenium unreal. \nOn the fair flower of Emancipation fell the canker of anti-Semitism.The very speed and thoroughness of Jewish assimil-ation and the sudden incursion of the freedmen into hitherto for-bidden fields produced their reaction.Nor did the growth ofthe democratic idea prevent the spread of anti-Semitism.In asense it aided the process by promoting among the severalpeoples of Europe a heightened sense of their own worth,dis- \ntinctiveness and national destiny.Abstract democracy found itsconcrete expression in the national State,i","cbCaii2cidKdVWbD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaii2cidKdVWbD","pdf",2457114,52,"English","# Introduction\n## From
