a despised symbol offailure and corruption.Regardless of a person'spolitical leanings, however,Obama is a symbolof change-for good or forill. \nIn 2007,he was a first time senator who wasrunning to become the Democratic candidate forPresident. His meteoric rise was astounding, andhe was often compared to President John F.Kennedy (because of his youthful persona)andPresident Franklin D.Roosevelt (because heinherited a severe economic recession). \nBarack Obama,America's 44th President, wasAmerica's first African American (and first non-caucasian)President.Whatever a person's \nfeelings about him politically,Obama's personalstory is certainly inspiring. As an interracial child, born to a white mother, his family moved aroundfrequently. This created many obstacles andproduced many setbacks for him,but it alsogave him a wealth of experiences, exposed him \nto many different cultures, shaped his worldview,and-unbeknownst to him at the time-startedhim on a path that would eventually make himthe most famous man in the world. \n# Chapter 1\n\nA Difficult Beginning \nWhile the Civil Rights Movement was gainingmomentum in the United States,Barack HusseinObama ll was born in Hawaii on August 4,1961.His family may have been far from the unrestoccurring on the mainland, but they were farfrom being accepted in their communities.Hismother was a Kansan named Ann Dunham, whohad transplanted to the islands;his father, \nBarack Obama,Sr.,was Kenyan and had cometo America to complete his higher education. With a white mother and a black father,Obamawas a mixed-race child at a time when interracialcouples were culturally unacceptable in America. \nWhen he was just two years old,Obama'sparents divorced, and hís father moved to \nMassachusetts to pursue his doctoral studies ineconomics at Harvard University.Although hisfather was largely absent from Obama's life, hismother soon remarried, this time to a LoloSoetoro, from Indonesia.Like Obama Senior,Soetoro was studying at the University of Hawaii \nas an exchange student. When Obama was sixyears old,the family moved to Indonesia.Duringthe four years that he spent in Indonesia,Obamaattended both Catholic and Muslim schools, learning about other religions while beingimmersed in a completely unfamiliar culture.During this time, his mother also focused on hisEnglish skills. She firmly believed that hisknowledge of English would help to give himsignificant opportunities. To ensure that he didnot lose his ability to speak English, she enrolledhim in English correspondence classes, whichrequired him to wake early to review the \nlanguage lessons. While they were in Indonesia, his younger sister,Maya, was born. \nThe schools in Indonesia did not offer the kind ofeducation that his mother wanted for him,so,when he turned 10,she sent him to live with herparents,Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, who hadmoved to Hawaii. He was sent to PunahouSchool, where he remained until he graduatedfrom high school. The intellect that he laterbecame known for was not on display in hisyouth as he did not particularly excel at school. He was a good student, but he was not the kindof outstanding student he became in college.Hedid well enough on the basketball court to be amember of the varsity team.It ","cbCaikLODGmru7PH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikLODGmru7PH","pdf",2782478,68,"English","# Table of Contents\n## Introduction\n##
