MIKE SCHMITZ \nMaccabean Revolt Narrative: 1 Maccabees 14–16; 2 Maccabees 1–4 Supplemental: Sirach 34–49; Proverbs 23:22–24:16 \n2 MACCABEES STRESSES THE TEMPLE’S SANCTITY \nThe Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple by Raphael \nThe second book of Maccabees is \nnot a sequel to 1 Maccabees. The second book returns us to the beginning of the revolt with a special emphasis on the Temple and its sanctity. This is the end of the historical narrative of God’s people until the New Testament. While 1 Maccabees tells the story, 2 Maccabees offers a different perspective. \n• In 1 Maccabees, we see that Judas and Jonathan are great fighters, while Simon is a true leader. \n• By the end of 1 Maccabees and the victory of the Jewish rebels, we read in 14:12,“Each man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to make them afraid.” Israel has rest from its enemies. \n• Then, in 2 Maccabees, we read parts of the story again, but the focus shifts to how the people choose to be faithful or unfaithful to the Lord. \n• The author of 2 Maccabees introduces the story with the feast of the purification of the Temple, which is now celebrated as Hanukkah. \n• At the beginning of 2 Maccabees, Heliodorus is being sent to collect the Temple treasury for the foreign king. In distress, the people pray to the Lord, and he protects his Temple. Heliodorus has a vision that puts him in danger of death and then a second vision telling him to praise the Lord and thank Onias, the high priest, for his intercession since he will now be healed. Thus, he is converted to faith in the one true God. \n• But then, in 2 Maccabees 4, we hear of the Greek customs introduced in Jerusalem by Jason, who became high priest through corruption. \n• Jason set up a gymnasium and enrolled the young men of the city, which caused the Hellenization of the people to happen quickly, leading to their infidelity to the Lord. \n• The role of the Temple is important to these books because it highlights the relationship between faithfulness and worship. How the Jews promoted or diminished true worship directly indicated whether they were faithful or not to God. \n• In the same way, true worship of God is central to Sirach. For example, Sirach 35:7–8 talks about the cheerful and generous worship of God: “The sacrifice of a righteous man is acceptable, and the memory ofit will not be forgotten. Glorify the Lord generously, and do not stint the first fruits of your hands.” \nDive Deeper \nWhen you need advice, where do you turn for counsel? In prayer today, ask the Lord to guide you to some holy and wise people you can ask for counsel when you need it. \nBible Answers \nWho are the young men and the rider that Heliodorus sees in his vision in 2 Maccabees 3? \nWhen Heliodorus enters the Temple treasury to seize its funds on behalf of the king, the Jewish people pray for the Lord’s protection and perform acts of penance. We read that Heliodorus sees a rider with gold armor and weapons of gold riding on “a magnificently caparisoned horse”with two young men who are“remarkably strong, gloriously beautiful and splendidly dressed”(2 Maccabees 3:25–26). Based on the context, we can say that both the rider and the two men are most likely angels. \nAt the Resurrection of Jesus, the Gospels of Mark and Luke say that the disciples encounter young men at Jesus’ tomb, while these men are referred to as angels in Matthew and John. In many places, the Bible speaks of angels appearing as men who are terrifying to behold. Another interpretation is that the rider of the horse is the Son of God, accompanied by two angels appearing as men. While these events occurred more than a century before the coming of Jesus, the Son of God is depicted as the rider of a white horse in the Book of Revelation (see Revelation 19:11–16). \nCAVE NEAR MOUNT NEBO \nPictured is a cave near Mount Nebo.
