recounted in the megillah (thescroll of Esther),which is read in the synagogue withenthusiasm and a great deal of loud participation fromthe costumed revelers. The holiday is associatedwith simchah from the Author\n\nPurim is one of the most festive holidays in the Jewish calendar. It falls on thefourteenth of Adar, the Jewish month that occurs during February or March. \nOn Purim, the story of the brave Queen Esther is told. She saved the Jewish peopleliving in Persia from death about 2,500 years ago.The king of Persia,Ahasuerus, hadan evil prime minister,Haman, who plotted to kill all the Jews.Mordecai,QueenEsther's cousin, heard of the plan and told the queen.Risking her own life,QueenEsther went to the king and informed him of the plot.King Ahasuerus had Hamanhung from the gallows that had been built for hanging the Jews. \nDuring the holiday, the story of Esther is read from a long scroll called a megillab.Haman's name is drowned out by noisemakers,or groggers, each time it is mentioned.Groggers are small toys that are spun around and around, making a rasping sound.Any loud noise is good for stamping out Haman's name. \nThe holiday is celebrated with masquerade parties and a festive meal.Familiesact out the story of Purim with great fun and hilarity. These plays are called Purimspiels.Hamantaschen, cookies that look like Haman’s triangle-shaped hat,are eatenon Purim. They are often filled with a poppy-seed paste called mohn. \nThe giving of gifts of food and wine to one's friends is a Purim tradition calledmishloach manot. It is also common to give donations to people in need on the holiday. \n\"Purim is coming!Time to bake somebetter-than-best hamantaschen,\"sa","cbCaicGocVtJn0ah","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicGocVtJn0ah","pdf",2557160,36,"English","# A Note from
