It lists the cast and choir, highlights the celebratory 50th-anniversary context of a Banks Sports Association production, and describes the operetta’s plot and memorable numbers. The text also recounts notable historical productions in Malta, London, and New York, including its reception and longevity across decades.","Teatru Manoel \npresents \nGustave Kerker's OperettaThe \nThe Belle of New York,a turn of the century operetta by a German-American composercalled Gustave Kerker,is no stranger to Malta. It is a musically delicious sentimentalescapade where a pretty Salvation Army girl becomes a reluctant millionairess. It wasfirst produced in Malta by a British company in 1900,and was produced a generationlater,in 1926-27,by the Malta Amateur Light Theatrical Association under thedirection of Dr Augustus Bartolo. Then in 1952,yet another generation later,it wasproduced again by Mr Charles J.Wirth for the Banks Sports Association. \nThe unlikely plot of the operetta is held together by delightful arias and beautifulchorus numbers. The theme song She is the Belle of New York is the big show stopper. But several equally catchy numbers like Oh teach me how to kiss dear,Coney Island,When we are maied,The omamental purity brigade,Labelle Parisienne and others ensurethat the audience leave the theatre in a blissfully melodic mood. \nCertainly the show needs no introduction to the oldergeneration who are sure to enjoy this nostalgic tripdown memory lane.Youngsters on their part shouldbe pleased to sample at first hand the delightful melodiesoften hummed by their elders.Who knows, they mayfind the concert a pleasant change from disco music! \nMaestro Joe Fenech is reviving this old favourite bypresenting a concert version of the Belle of New Yorkat Sala Isouard to mark the fiftieth anniversary of itslast production in Malta. The singers include TerryBencini who played Mamie Clancy in the Banks'production,Karen Camilleri,Joseph Aquilina,AlbertButtigieg and the Choirof the University of the ThirdAge,with musical accompaniment by Lina Galea andCynthia Genovese. \n50th Anniversary of the BanksSports Association's Production of‘The Belle of New York' \nby Claude Gaffiero \nThe Belle of New York was written by Hugh Morton and the music wascomposed by Gustave Kerker in 1897.Kerker was born in Germany andemigrated to Kentucky in the USA at the age of ten.He wrote the musicfor a number of other operettas but this one seems to have been the mostpopular, probably due to the success it achieved in Europe. \nThe first production,at the Casino Theatre in New York, was a failure.Although lavishly staged and superbly costumed, this gay and sentimentalstory was perhaps too great a contrast to the minstrel shows which werethen so popular in America. \nFortunately George Musgrove, the manager of London's ShaftshuryTheatre, who was in New York at the time, saw the show and bought it onthe spot for a mere song.It transferred toLondon complete with the originalcast, including Edna May,and opened on 12 April 1898.It so fascinatedthe English audiences that it ran for a total of 697 consecutive performancesat the Shaftsbury Avenue Theatre, after which it continued to be producedin a number of other London theatres including the Adelphi, the Lyceum, the Strand,Daly's,and the Garrick.Belle of Neu York was in fact the firstmusical to cross the Atlantic from West to East. \nIt was not long before the show that fascinated British audiences foundits way to Malta.InOctober 1900 the Bandmann English Opera Companypresented a short repertoire of comic operas at the Manoel Theatre.Inaddition to the Belle of Neu York, this included La Cigale,Little ChristopherColombus,The Mikado,The Geisha,Floradora, and
