During lunchtime they improvise play, building homemade balls from rice packets and turning the schoolyard into a lively Mekeo-style volleyball match. Boxing confidence and quick footwork power the game, but rising competition also invites teasing and sharper words, shifting celebration into conflict.","The Bell Jason Paisoi \nEskoi Ismael Bogen \nThe wide path leading to Inauaia Primary School slowly fills with footsteps, laughter, and excited voices. \nTwo small groups of Grade 5 boys walk toward the school grounds. Some come from homes close to the banana gardens, where the leaves are still wet with morning dew. Others pass through big betelnut plantations, where pigs sniff the soil and grunt softly asthe boys hurry past. \nThe boys do not walk in silence. They talk loudly, proudly, and sometimes all at once . \n“Lunch time, volleyball challenge!” one group calls out. \n“No, kickboxing first!” another group replies, laughing. \nFrom the back of the track, a confident voice rises above the rest. Mapai boasts about his small boxing team back in Yeku, his clan in Inauaia village, telling everyone how hard they train and that he is ready to win.“Today,”he says proudly, “I will smash the ball!” \nAt Inauaia Primary, the boys often make their own ball. The ball is made from a rice packet, packed tightly with paper and tied firmly with a rubber band.. \nThese balls roll everywhere . Under desks, beside school bags, across dusty floors, and sometimes even in the classroom during lessons. Teachers often shake their heads when they see it, but to the boys, the ball is more than rubbish. It is a symbol of play, pride, and proving themselves. \nThe school ground comes alive by lunchtime. Some children are sitting and enjoying bananas, rice and biscuits. While others are chasing each other around the school. Laughter fills the air. Aufa and Ame quickly set up their favourite Mekeo style volleyball game. Two boys stand on each side holding along stick as a net, while 4 players face eachother, ready to strike . \nThe plastic ball flies high and feet move fast. Hands swing with power learned from boxing training. Cheers rise from the crowd. \nBut as the game becomes faster and more competitive, teasing begins to slip in quietly. A missed hit by Mapai turns into laughter. A joke becomes sharp. Words are thrown harder than the ball.","cbCainJHJuaMx4TO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainJHJuaMx4TO","pdf",2217814,2,21,"English","en",105,"# The Walk to School\n## Homemade Balls and Schoolyard Play\n## Volleyball at Lunchtime\n## Teasing and Rising Tension","[{\"question\":\"What homemade equipment do the boys use at Inauaia Primary School?\",\"answer\":\"The boys often make their own ball from a rice packet, tightly packed with paper and secured with a rubber band.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the lunchtime volleyball game organized?\",\"answer\":\"Aufa and Ame set up a Mekeo-style volleyball game using sticks as a net, with four players facing each other to strike the plastic ball.\"},{\"question\":\"What changes as the volleyball game becomes more competitive?\",\"answer\":\"Missed hits and jokes escalate into teasing, with sharp words replacing the earlier excitement.\"}]",1783571388,32,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":27},"the-bell","",{"@graph":35,"@context":84},[36,52,67],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,46,49],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-bell/48872/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":40,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-13","2026-07-09",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"What homemade equipment do the boys use at Inauaia Primary School?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"The boys often make their own ball from a rice packet, tightly packed with paper and secured with a rubber band.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"How is the lunchtime volleyball game organized?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"Aufa and Ame set up a Mekeo-style volleyball game using sticks as a net, with four players facing each other to strike the plastic ball.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"What changes as the volleyball game becomes more competitive?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"Missed hits and jokes escalate into teasing, with sharp words replacing the earlier excitement.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
