The material explores who speaks, the meaning of “poor in spirit,” “meek,” mourning, hunger and thirst for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and persecution. It encourages readers to seek God alone, pursue righteous desires with lifelong consistency, practice mercy, cultivate blameless motives, build peace, and persevere despite difficulty.","The Beatitudes \nMatthew 5:3-12 \nEnglish Spiritual \nThe Beatitudes \nBy: Marlene Custer \nIllustrations: International Illustrations: Art of Reading 3.0 \nEnglish \nUSA \nScripture quotations are from The ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), copyright © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. (See verse 1) Who are the 'poor in spirit'? \nWhat does it mean to be meek? \nDo you want to be happy? Jesus tells us how . \nJesus said those that are poor in spirit would be blessed, or happy. The 'poor in spirit' are humble people, not proud. They do not think they are better than others. \nThe poor in spirit do not seek the things of this world. They understand that they must depend on God for everything they need. \nPeople that mourn are sorry for the bad things they have done, or the bad feelings they have about other people . They cry out to God for others to know Jesus. \nWhen we think of a meek person, we usually think of someone who is gentle or patient. \nWhen Jesus says these people are 'blessed', he is encouraging us to strive for these qualities in our own lives. Are you trusting in God alone? Are you truly sorry for the bad things you are doing or thinking? Are you gentle with your family and neighbors? Are you patient with them? \nIf you are struggling in one or more of these areas, don't be discouraged! Take one item at a time, and ask God to help you become the person He wants you to be . \n\"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. \n\"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. \n\"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.\" \nMatthew 5:6-8 (ESV) \nWho is speaking? Does that add importance to these words? \nWhat do you think God wants you to learn from these verses? \nDo you want mercy from others? What do you need to do to get that mercy? \nWhat does it mean to be 'pure in heart'? \nPeople who hunger and thirst after righteousness have a strong desire to do what is right and just. Just as they want food when they are hungry or water when they are thirsty, that is how much they want to do what God wants. This is not a one time desire, but a hunger that continues throughout our lifetime . \nDo you want mercy shown to you? You must show mercy to others. As a Christian, you have received God's mercy. \nDo you know someone that needs help today? Do you have the ability to help them? You should be happy to minister to them . God blesses those that take the time to be kind. \nBeing pure in heart means we are blameless, focused on pleasing God. There are no wrong motivesin the pure heart. Our prayer should be Psalm 51:10,\"Create in me a pure heart, O God....\" . (ESV) \n\"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. \n\"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven .\" \nMatthew 5:9-10 (ESV) \nAre you a peacemaker? Do you think before you say something that you know will cause bad feelings? \nHave you ever been persecuted for following Christ? \nPeacemakers work to understand and prevent strife . They try to keep families and friends speaking to eachother. They are not quick to file lawsuits, or encourage hostilities toward others. Peacemakers reach out to those they may disagree with.","cbCaiuAXdHIs017k","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuAXdHIs017k","pdf",342518,4,1,12,"English","en",105,"# The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12)\n## Poor in spirit, mourning, and meekness\n## Hunger and thirst for righteousness, mercy, and pure in heart\n## Peacemakers and those persecuted for righteousness","[{\"question\":\"Who is speaking in the Beatitudes, and why are these words important?\",\"answer\":\"These verses are spoken by Jesus.
