didn't forget toinsert your VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC mapsheetand counters in this issue. The bad news is thatthere isn't any insert!I'm afraid we've renegedon our pledge of 4 months ago to bring youVICTORY IN THE PACIFIC as a WAR AT SEAgame variant in the July issue. After con-siderable thought and much work,we decidedthe best course was to issue VICTORY IN THEPACIFIC as itsownseparate game.Thisdecisioncame about because VITP became far more thana game variant—it required a 22”×28”map,several hundred two-sided counters, and agame system whichevolved into something onlyfaintly resembling WAS.This hardly left it in the\"variant\"classification.We are determined notto add to the game glut with a game in everyissue and therefore steered away from inferiorproduction of what is,for allintents &purposes,a brand new game. The GENERAL's primarypurpose is to analyze games—not publish them. And besides,VITP turned out to be too damngood to use in amagazine format where it wouldhave suffered from inferior paper maps andcounters. The game itself has evolved into sucha sophisticated and fine-tuned effort that it isalmost difficult to remember that it sprang fromWAS.The basic simplicity and playabilty of WASremains, but VITP is a far better simulation—albeit a longer one.VITPis advertizedelsewherein this issue and once you've given it atry, you'llbe glad we hit you
