It praises White as an unforgettable, deeply American writer, editor, and journalist whose life and political and economic reflections resist easy explanation. The review highlights his childhood in the Midwest, his perspective on journalism and politics, and the vivid social history seen through his own the greatAmerican autobiog-raphies of the nine-teenth century.Iknow that this seemsa strong statement, with so many of ournational leaders stillalive whose careers \nmerit of this book, which makes it a greathuman document. For William Allen Whitehimself was an unforgettable personality. He was a little vain(what fun he makes ofhimself over this trait!),naive until wellpast middle age, ambitious, but more gener-ous than ambitious,warm-hearted,shrewdenough in his job,but not at all shrewd abouthimself, and so most humanly inconsistent. He was the kind of man that everyoneof importance sent for sooner or later,be-cause if you wished to understand the coun-try,somehow or another you had to knowBill White. And for this personality, whichcould not have been developed anywherebut in the United States, and anywhere inthe United States except in the MississippiValley, you do not have to quarry. The man, fortunately, was a born writer.Next to be-ing almost the type American,White wasnear to being the type editor and journalist. His life, for him, when he came to write it,was his most challenging assignment. It wasalso his most puzzling assignment, for againand again he confesses that he cannot seehow he“got that way”in politics or eco-nomics,can't understand what kept him aboy at heart, wonders why so many peopletold him their stories. It was an assignmentwhich apparently he had to drop and pickup again over a number of years, but hedoes it as well as he edited his famous news- \nHENRY SEIDEL CANBY \nwere shaped by the nineteenth century.Butwas there ever an American more typicallyAmerican than this Mid-Westerner,WilliamAllen White?Where else are we to expecta first-hand account by a gifted writer of achildhood, just East of the buffalo and theIndians, that bcgan in 1868?What otherAmerican, still able to tell the story, spentmost of a lifetime in the rough and tumbleof journalism and politics of that era;whowas a Republican with a Democratic heart,a hero of the Bull Moose Party,a confidantof Theodore Roosevelt,a friend of prettymuch everyone that shaped our history, ofsome of the worst as well as many of thebest?Who can tell better than Bill Whiteof the “boom and bust”of the West in themid-century,which he saw,not understand-ing the \"whys\"of it,and so describes hon-estly and vividly without preconceived theo-ries? \nAnd yet I have not described the chief \npapers-gets all the news into it,gets, mostimportantly, himself vividly into it,as a goodfeature reporter should. On every page ofthis book you meet Bill White, but in noegotistical sense;rather,as if he were sittingbeside you, telling what he was,and what hethought,so that you can see through his eyesall this social and political history as itseemed to one who was a part of it. \nIf I had to make a bid for part of this bookand let the rest go,I would take the openingchapters, though I am well aware that manywill disagree and say that the inside story ofAmerican journalism and American politicsthat comes later,is more important.Maybeit is,but as one who believes that emotionalexperiences outlive politics,I would not swapWhite's account of his boyhood for all hisfriends among the bosses and the Presidents. For here is a little town in Kansas in the187o's and 188o's done as well in White'sway as Mark Twain did Hannibal in Mis-souri.And what is so good about the pic-ture,is not the differences from, but the re-semblances to,that small-tow","cbCaioml5MKSXsYh","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioml5MKSXsYh","pdf",3120766,36,"English","# Editorial Board of the Book-of-the-Month Club\n## For March: The Autobiography
