respect to computationsurely,but his publication Economies of Manufacturegives him standing in the eyes of some as thefounder of operations research as well),he wasalso a colorful and provocative personality.No onewho could dedicate a major portion of his time totormenting organ grinders could have been dulland,consequently,I am for anything that addsto the Babbage lore.  \nI  \nThe high points of his life and contributions totechnology have in recent years been reasonablywell disseminated:his sickly and secluded child-hood;his years at Cambridge where he foundedthe Analytic Society and where,in 1812,the dreamof the Difference Engine first came to him;thelater construction of what we might today call a\"data flow model\"of it under a grant from the  \nBritish government;his inspiration from the Jac-quard loom for a calculating machine employingthe punched card principle;the expansion of thisnotion to the design of the Analytic Engine,whichwas to receive both operations and variables fromcard documents;his appointment to the LucasianProfessorship at Cambridge though he never de-livered a lecture there;and his bitter disappoint-ment when the Chancellor of the
