The Atwood breakthrough:“Life Before Man”

when chautauqua brought culture to thetowns of canada ■ the great crash of'29
# CLIUBJELECTION

Life Before Man
## Possibly the best of all Atwood's books

By Margaret Atwood
Reviewed by Robert Fulford
个he oldest of all plot gimmicks, the I love triangle, stands at the heart of Margaret Atwood's remarkable newnovel:two determined women contendbitterly for the affections of a man.Butthere's nothing antique about Atwood'sapproach. Her account of two years inthe lives of some absorbing people ischarged with a sense of life and immedi-acy,and particularly with a sure senseof the ways in which educated people in
ustalion by David Anmesley
the 1970s treat each other in their inti-mate relationships.Life Before Manseems to me the best of Atwood's fournovels, perhaps the best work she hasdone in any field. And as a novel writ-ten in a highly readable style, about ahighly popular subject,it may welladvance her to genuine best-seller status.
Her three central characters live inToronto in the late 1970s and Torontoreaders will find many of the settings
familiar-local institutions like Fran's
| "One of the most
important
writers in English
today"
—Germaine Greer
upon to seem happy even if she's not:
"Lesje's mother wants Lesje to be
happy, and if Lesje isn't happy she
wants her to appear to be happy.”Eliza-
beth is arrogant and yet easily wounded.
Lesje is tentative and shy,yet in the end
quite shrewd.Both women are drawn
with care and sensitivity,but Atwood-
who has never before worked comfort-
ably within the fictional personality of a
man-is most surprisingly impressive
when she deals with the rather passive
Nate:
“Occasionally...Nate thinks of him-
self as a lump of putty, helplessly
moulded by the relentless demands and
flinty disapprovals of the women he
can't help being involved with.Dutiful-
ly,he tries to make them happy. He
fails not because of any intrinsic weak-
ness or lack of will, but because their
own desires are hopelessly divided.And
there's more than one of them, these
women.They abound,they swarm.”
Life Before Man describes meticu-
lously the rituals of courtship,detach-
ment,divorce,and remarriage among
the middle class to which the characters
belong.Atwood's eye for significant
detail is unerring, her ear for educated
talk nearly flawless, her own cool unsen-
timental tone constantly engaging.Life
Before Man is one of the triumphant
performances in recent Canadian
writing. |
| --- |
| LIFE BEFORE MAN,by Margaret Atwood,
