COUNTRIES and at different times the appeal of Christthat all may b?one fell,as the sower's seed does, upon good soil andbrought forth a good harvest of unity. \nIn certain other instances Divine Providence prepared the soil for unityin the Eastern hierarchy with the sharp plcw cf historical misfortunes. As weknow, the patriarchs of Constantinople completed unity at Lyons and Florencein the face of the threats of the Moslem invaders.Another instance of diff-culties faced was that experienced by the Ukrainian Bishops at the Brest Unionin 1596 when those bishops laboring with high motives realized that re-unionwith the Apostolic See was the only recourse left to lift up their Church from itsdecay and degradation. This they accomplished for a part of'the Ukrainian nationbut to their sorrow could not do for the entire country because of the mistrust, bitterness and enmity of certain powerful groups. In a number of other coun-tries of the Near East individual groups with their bishops also concludedre-union with Rome in the face of difficulties.Among these were the Melchites,Armenians and Chaldeans, and later the Malankarese. \nIn studying the situation of the Christian East,it will be observed that themajor number of the separated Christian hierarchy is deaf to the call of theApostolic See for church unity.Pope Pius IX invited the separated membersof this hierarchy to the Vatican Council. They replied with the absence of theirpresence. To the encyclicals of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI,the Orthodoxanswered with actions against the encyclicals.Even the Ukrainian Orthodoxbishops showed their aversion to the idea of unity when an appeal was madefor it by the late Metropolitan Andrew Shepticky. \nIt is not easy to find justification for such action—the unfriendly attitudeon the part of the separated patriarchs, metropolitans and bishops-in view ofthe fact that for the Protestants the Orthodox do not make reservations thoughin dogma, liturgy, and custom both have nothing in common. The Protestantsdo not accept certain truths of faith in which the Orthodox and Catholicsbelieve.Neither do the Protestants recognize the sacraments nor the
