Through the Delhi lecture framework and accompanying editorial discussion, it frames key issues in the scope of linguistics, language acquisition, and language theory. The editors explain the unusual intensity of the Indian academic debate, document extensive audience participation, and situate the lecture’s goals in relation to historical research leading to the Minimalist Program.","The Architectureof Languageedited byNirmalangshu Mukherji·Bibudhendra Narayan Patnaik·Rama Kant Agnihotri \nhttps://archive.org/details/architectureofla00noam \n# The published authors on language and mind.Apart from writing many books and papers, hehas addressed, and continues to address,a vast range ofaudiences all over the world on these topics.A number ofthese lectures have been published in book-form.Nonethe less,we thought that another addition to this large, and growing catalogue was in order. \nChomsky was in India for about a week in January1996.The visit started with a series of lectures in Delhi.²Of the five public lectures he delivered, only one con-cerned his work on language and mind.³The eventgenerated unprecedented enthusiasm in the academiccommunity of Delhi. The lecture itself took about an hourand a half, and was followed by a very vigorous question-and-answer session covering a wide variety of topics.Somany questions were submitted, and left unanswered, thatChomsky agreed to respond to these when he returnedto MIT.A set of questions was compiled by the Depart-ment of Linguistics,Delhi University, and sent to Chomsky. He sent back detailed responses within a month. \n# Editor's Preface\n\nWe are told that a similar response is generated whereverNoam Chomsky speaks. However, this kind of popular, prolonged and intense intellectual debate is seldom seenin the Indian academic scene.Chomsky was visiting Indiaafter a gap of over twenty-five years and, given his busyschedule, there is no telling when—or indeed if—he willreturn. So the occasion itself, especially the vigorousparticipation of the audience, was well worth documenting. Moreover, after the event, many requests were received forcopies of the recording and transcripts of the proceedings. Many eager enquirers to whom Chomsky generously repliedfrom MIT were lost to the organizers once the audiencehad dispersed;and we felt a responsibility to at least attemptto reach them.Hence this book. \nThere is also a purely intellectual reason for publishingthis volume.Chomsky was given the arduous task of tracingthe entire historical chain of events, which began with hisearly research on language⁴and led up to the Minimalist Pro-gram(Chomsky 1995b).He was also requested to
