Canfield,\"is like living throughan experience rather than just reading a book.\"It tells the extraord-nary story of an American woman,a fine writer, who was held forthree years with her husband and adored little boy in a Japanese intern-ment camp in Burma.Moving but not harrowing, because it is writtenwith such understanding and compassion,it was an immediate and unan-imous choice of the Club’s five Judges;and everybody who writes aboutbooks,we feel sure, will commend it to readers-warmly,as they do. \nTHREE CAME HOMEBy Agnes Newton Keith \nPrice $3.00 \nA Report by Dorothy Canfeld \nthose cndless years of tedium, dirt and dan-ger without a moment's wavering of his at-tention. \nTIHIE war correspon-dents did their best.In the newspapers, over the radio, theyhave tried to tell ustime after time whathappened to men, women, children, caught in the grind- \nIn short, the book is written, not throwntogether. And it is one of the first bookscomposed with exactly the purpose we need—to share with us who lived in safety in ourordinary surroundings during the war, whatnew things were learned about the possibili-ties and limitations of our common humannature during the volcanic upheaval of aglobal war. \nDoROTIIY CANTIELD \ning cogs of the war machine. And mostlythey have failed. With the journalists'finecode of accurate reporting, they have pre-sented the facts. But the facts are so impos-sibly alien to our lives(sheltered as we havebeen in the United States)that we can makeno scnse out of them. They do not seem apart of anybody's actual human experience. We cannot imagine them happening to us.We cannot really believe them. \nEverybody we meet in this report on lifein a Japanese prison camp seems as humanas we are:not only the women prisonersand children of our own race, but the Japa-nese officers and guards.Mrs.Keith came, through the bitterest experience,to under-stand how it all came to be.She makes usunderstand the inevitable callousness of thejailer,of the conqueror,of all conquerors! She makes us share the first panic of the pris-oners,most of them soft,waited-on,conven-tional upper-class American and Europeanwomen, plunged as they were into hardship, danger and hard, heavy, physical labor;or-dered around, instead of ordering othersaround;in a position of material inferiority, instead of members of a group which as-sumes to be the master-race and treats othersas servants. Then through three and a halfyears, the tragic facts of suffering, the wither-ing in personality of the crushed, the growthin character of the strong and good. \nNo one can help believing what we aretold about prison camp life in Three CameHomc. It does seem to have happened tous and our children,as well as to those pris-oners.For Mrs.Keith has the skill in writingneeded for the difficult task of making whatis unknown, unseen, never experienced, seemto us as real as it was to her.She has learned,as every author is forced to learn or fail, howto choose the significant details, many ofthem small, apparently trivial, which add upto life-likeness.Mrs.Keith has known, also, how to eliminate unnecessary dctail, how toplan and construct her book so that she car-ries her reader with her straight through \nThe author does not sermonizingly tell usthe meaning of the strange, harsh eventswhich happened to her and her adored littleson—and to us,because of her skill in report-ing them.We simply live with her, from thefirst day of shocked incredulous horror atbeing prisoners to that last hour of deliriousjoy when the American airplanes come over.We are beside her,day by day, from morn-ing to night. We learn from seeing it,howhuman life can be organize","cbCaiopXxsnCz7Cs","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiopXxsnCz7Cs","pdf",2191338,28,"English","# The April Selection\n## Three Came
