Apothecaries ofthe City of London has been placed by threatened legislation, andby the new regulations of the Medical Council, induces me to offerto the public and my professional brethren the following briefhistory of our Society, from the time of its foundation to thepresent period;and I trust I shall be able to convince my readersof the great benefit which the Society has rendered during itslengthened existence to science, the advantages it has conferred onthe world at large, and the ability it still displays to carry on itsfunctions for the good of mankind, whilst it upholds its ownreputation, and the honor of the Medical Profession. \nMy thanks are especially due to my friend Dr.Furley, forcopious, new, and interesting matter with which that gentlemanhas kindly furnished me,and for which I desire to make my publicacknowledgments. To John J.Merriman,Esq.,also,I am muchindebted for his kindness in placing Dr.Merriman's“Memorabilia”at my disposal.Other friends have afforded me some minorsuggestions, amongst whom are H.W.Statham,Esq.,WillingtonClark,Esq.and H.P.Owen,Esq.,to whom I desire to express mysincere thanks. \nGEORGE CORFE,Master. \nMARCH,1885. \nTHE A POTHE CARY: \nAncienf ans 2oSernt. \nThe archaic profession of skilfully mixing certain drugs andherbs for a inedicinal or for an antiseptic purpose is lost in pre-historic times. We may catch a glimpse of the art and mystery ofan Apothecary in the relation of the Patriarch's son commandingPharaoh’s physicians to embalm his venerable parent's body(Gen. \n1.2).The Egyptians were the sole inventors of this art, whichwas feebly imitated, but never equalled,by Assyrians,Scythians,or Persians. The process would necessarily carry with it a know·ledge of both Human and Comparative Anatomy, since the headsof sacred animals were also often embalmed,—such as the Bull, theIbis, and the Crocodile(or modern Dragon)on which Apollo strides—as in our Society's coat of arms. The perfection of this art hasbeen elucidated by many examples during the present century, even to the maintenance of the vitality of the embryos of cerealsfound in Egyptian mummies. \nThe compounding of ointments and confections is set forth inHebraic History with unusual distinctness in the following passages:一“Take thou also unto thee principal spices,of pure myrrh fivehundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even twohundred and ffty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred andfifty shekels;and of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekelof the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin;and thou shalt make it anoil of holy ointment,an ointment compound after the art of theApothecary:it shall be an holy anointing oil\"(Exodus xxx.23-5).“And thou shalt make it a perfume,a confection after the art ofthe Apothecary, tempered (salted)together, pure and holy”(v.35).So also when the Babylonish king sent to the godly ruler in Jeru-salem a present,on his restoration to healtl,Hezekiah exhibited tothe courtiers of Berodach-Baladan\"his precious spicery, and hisprecious ointment\"(2 Kings xx.13);made after the same art, andfrom which dead flies were to be avoided,as they caused the oint- \nment of the Apothecary to send forth a stinking savour(Eccles.x.1).The wisdon that was vouchsafed unto this holy writer wasimitated by the son of Sirach,200 B.C.,after the captivity of hispeople, and their restoration to Judæa,he collected in later yearsthe wise sayings of ancient godly men,and thus opens his 38thchapter:一 \n1.Honour a physician with the honour due unto him;for theuses which ye may
