Screaming about stolen cigarettes and \na confiscated radio. Emily Best had stopped caring about her fellow inmates approximately 527 days ago. She’d been inside 528 days. \nEmily had no desire to see any of them on the outside. They weren’t her people. They were proper criminals. Violent women, thieves who’d hurt people, drug dealers who’d destroyed lives. She’d only nicked some coins from a field. The whole thing was a travesty. She should never have been locked up in the first place. \nEmily rolled over in her bed and stared at the calendar stuck to the wall. \n15th of October 2025. Release day. It was odd to release a prisoner in the middle of the week. A Wednesday wasn’t the start of the week, or the beginning of the weekend. She felt a little discombobulated. Not that she wanted to wait until Friday. She’d wanted to get out of here the very same day she’d walked in. \nThat went without saying. \nBut having Friday as a prisoner release day was surely better for everyone? Especially those on the outside. \nTwo years. That’s what the judge had given her for not declaring the Cheviots Hoard. Well, for not declaring it, and for breaking it up, and for selling it off. In parts. To different people. Both here and overseas. \n‘The Scourge of Cheviot Hills.’ Jasper Fletcher at the Hexham Herald had run that headline three times. She’d kept the clippings in a folder, still unsure how she felt about it. She’d never met the journalist, and he certainly \nhadn’t ever interviewed her for her side of the story. He was definitely on the side of the archaeologists. \nLow Newton’s release processing centre smelled of disinfectant and cheap coffee.
